This Means War // Movie Review

Rating: 5/5 stars; Loved it. Add-to-your-collection worthy.

Release Date: February 14, 2012 (a.k.a Valentine's Day)

Synopsis:
Two CIA agents and best friends (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) discover that they are dating the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), which ultimately affects both their professional and personal lives.

Thoughts:
This movie is fun, has plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, cute, has bro-love, has guy-girl love that's sweet, and is overall worth the theater ticket. I highly recommend this one!
Most romcoms/action flicks (and this movie is a bit of both) are pretty predictable and this one was not one of them. The spy bit of the movie is not as drawn out as I would like and it focuses more on answering the question of"who's the girl going to choose?" Even though that was the case, I still found myself really enjoying the movie. I can't wait until it out on Blu-ray. Loved it!
Like I said, this movie focuses a lot on the romcom part so don't go thinking you'll get a full blown James Bond movie. Expect a few great fight scenes and action packet bits. Expect some adorable moments with bros that love each other (awww I'm such a sucker for this! Have ya'll seen I Love You, Man? Cute brocom). This gal can't get enough of friendship stories. Speaking of friends, Chelsea Handler (yes, I watch her show every now and then) plays Lauren's (Reese Witherspoon) best gal pal and offers her mischievously humorous advice (in that unique way that Chelsea would), which of course has the audience laughing even more. Pay close attention to the slow-mo scene with Chelsea and her bug. So perfectly amusing, but I certainly would have been very upset had I been Lauren.
Just watch it! You got big bright blue beautiful eyes, Christ Pine *swoons*, on the left over there (poster), gorgeous and charming Reese Whiterspoon, amazingly British Top Hardy *swoons yet again* on the right. How can it get more entertaining?

What inspired you to write this story?

The post-apocalyptic scenario in Revealing Eden (Save The Pearls Part One) grew from my deep concernabout the loss of our natural environment. I wondered what would happen ifglobal warming turned today’s prevailing beauty standards upside down. Since Caucasianshave less melanin in their skin to protect them from the sun’s burning rays,the majority of their race is wiped out in the Great Meltdown. The survivorsare branded as inferior Pearls. Dark-skinned people, or Coals, who have moreresistance to the Heat, now rule society. Eden Newman, a lithe blue-eyedblonde, who would be considered gorgeous in our day, has to beg for a mate orsuffer an early death. The direction in which my wonderings took me greatlysurprised me, as it often does.

As a Pearl, Eden’s sees herself as ugly and inferior to others.Here, I tapped into my feelings about race and beauty, which began with anincident in elementary school. One day, as I stood at the front of the schoolwaiting for my mother, a boy leaned out of the window of a departing bus andhurled a racial slur at me. It wasn’t even about my race! But it stung all thesame. Perhaps because of that moment, I never felt beautiful. I focused ondeveloping my mind and told myself I didn’t care about looks. Years later, whenI starred in several indie films, I was flabbergasted by reviews that praisedmy beauty. To this day, I never have understood why appearance often mattersmore than character or intelligence.

Of course, Revealing Edenis also a great romance. I wanted to explore how I feel about love at thispoint in my life. When Eden unwittingly compromises her father’s secretbiological experiment, she is cast out into the last patch of rainforest andinto the arms of a powerful beast-man she believes is her enemy, despite heroverwhelming attraction to him. To survive, Eden must change, but only if shecan redefine her ideas of beauty and of love. In writing her story, luckily, Ialso found a way to open my heart and find love.

I am very curious to know how beauty and race play a part in your story (as it does in real life - you are so beautiful by the by!).

What would you do if you were in Pearl'ssituation?
That’s a very good question! However, it’s almost impossible to answer. Untilwe suffer prejudice, perhaps we don’t really know how it would affect us. Igreatly admire civil rights leaders who have withstood extreme situations andthreats, and those who have had the courage to stand with them. I like to thinkthat I would be brave if I was a Pearl, but I don’t know. Eden Newman begins asan insecure, oppressed girl, who is literally afraid of her own skin, until sheis forced to change in order to survive. Finally, she learns to embrace her unique beauty, and in the process, acceptslove. In the sequels, Eden must rise to even greater challenges and becomes onehell of a she-cat! Fortunately, I get to experience her ride vicariously. Butthen, that’s one of the great pleasures of reading: by identifying with theprotagonist, we can test our characters without leaving the comfort of oursurroundings.

How very true. I wonder what I would do in her situation...

What's the best thing a reader said about your book or something you wish areader said/felt when reading your book?

Honestly, the enthusiasmwith which readers have received RevealingEden (Save The Pearls Part One) floors me! The Examiner.com said that the “story will haunt readers, renderingthem to ponder over the concept hours after they finish the novel.” I reallyhope it does, and maybe, if only a little, change how we think about others andthe environment. A small confession: It tickles me whenever readers comment onhow hot Bramford is because I had so much fun conjuring him.

I truly enjoy books that change my way of thinking. I'm now quite curious about Bramford haha

Are there any T.V shows or songs that remind you of your book (this ispartially a T.V addict site after all)?

What kind of person do you consider yourself to be?
I straddle two extremes in a very logical, levelheaded, but romantic way: I’m bothdeeply analytical and also, highly creative. Fortunately, I’m also a homebody,because a writer’s isn’t very social. Mostly, I think I’m a grateful person.That sounds like a pushover, but I simply mean that I don’t take things in mylife for granted. Life has broken my habit of expectation! But perhaps the mostsalient characteristic I have is my deep abiding addiction to dark chocolate.

Dark chocolate is the best and healthier than other chocolates. Being grateful is certainly something precious.

Are you working on anything else right now (a book, restoring a car, etc.)?

I’m really enjoyingwriting the sequel, Adapting Eden (SaveThe Pearls Part Two). It’s a trip getting inside Eden’s beastly head. I’malso learning Italian—what a beautiful language. That, and about a millionother things! Really, sometimes, it’s hard to keep up with my life.

Wonderful! I read a few reviews with readers wanting to know more about Eden.

I'm actually learning Japanese, which is a bit easier to learn after being fluent in Spanish.

What I'm currently watching and my thoughts. Beware of spoilers. I'm basically complaining or squealing like a fangirl.

Big Bang Theory - Season 5, Ep 12, The Shiny Trinket Maneuver

Eeeeep!!!!! How adorable is that??! I totally think that Sheldon has Asperger's Syndrome so that's why he acts in certain ways and I'm very, very curious as to how he and Amy Farrah Fowler's relationship will continue to develop. By the by, I'm extremely jealous of my oldest sister because today she is going to see a live taping of Big Bang Theory. Curse this wretched world!! *shakes fist in the air* I hope one day I get to be there too.

I'm not even gonna mention ep 13. Lame. Not interested, but it was sad.

Sons of Anarchy - Season 1, Ep 9

I recently started watching this show. Ahhh the main lead is so freaking gorgeous AND he is British. Sadly, not on the show. :( Anywho, the show is pretty interesting and curious, but overall I find it a bit boring. It's full of action like I hoped, but the storyline is not compelling enough for me. I'm still going to continue it, but I won't be surprised if I give up on it.

Ep 9 had me thinking: "that sh*t cray." It's nuts. I can't believe that after that dead body's lying about that Tara and Jax get busy. So creepy.

New Girl - Season 1, Ep 10, The Story of the 50

Meh. I really don't want to give up on this show, but it's just not that great. The writers really need to step it up.

I really need to catch up on this past season of Dexter and The Walking Dead. They started off so lame that I just didn't care, but I'm thinking of at least fast forwarding so I can find out what happened. I still want to know where the stories went. Well, for The Walking Dead I pretty much already know since I've read the comics that correlate with that season.

Haywire (2011) // Movie Review

Rating: 2/5; I didn't like it, but didn't hate it.

Synopsis: A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.

Thoughts:

This was certainly not my kind of movie. I saw the trailer and did not expect to like it that much, but once I saw it...well I liked it less than I thought I would.

Haywire is basically about this badass chick who is set up and during the last third of the movie, seeks payback. Yes, you read that correctly. During most of the movie all we get is boring scenes mixed in with more boring scenes. The only thing worth watching about this movie is the fight scenes. Those were really good. Sadly, there are a total of about 4 of those.

Not particularly recommended for those who like an engaging story line, love stories (there's an extremely minuscule one here and it's not really that I'm just a hopeful - not hopeless - romantic), or movies that are worth the $10 ticket or your precious and ever dwindling time. If you rent it, I recommend you fast forward to the fight scenes only.

This new book is a part of a new series by Julie Cross. It sounds GREAT! Not only does it sound very fun because of the synopsis (read below), but it also sounds read-worthy because the movie rights have already been sold. Read below...

Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler // Book Review

Synopsis:
I'm telling you why we broke up, Ed. I'm writing it in this letter, the whole truth of why it happened.

Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.

Thoughts:
I was very excited to get this book because it is written by Daniel Handler a.k.a Lemony Snicket (I love the story in A Series of Unfortunate events and the fun way it was written).

Why We Broke Up is a 300+ letter written by Min, a junior in high school, to Ed, the jock guy that is her opposite and the person she is breaking up with for several reasons including the big one: he broke her heart. This book is pretty much about first loves and heartbreak. For Min and Ed, they lasted about two months, but those two months meant a lot to her. In her letter to Ed, she describes numerous significant objects that she will put in a box (along with the letter) to explain to Ed why they broke up.

The main reason I liked reading this book is how it is written and how the story develops. It's basically written in a way where you know how it will all end, yet you still hope that things end up okay. You get inside the head of this fangirl of old movies who falls for this guy who also falls for her. You get to be in every step of the way there with her and you get crushed when it ends. Well, almost crushed, because honestly, I would have liked to get to know the characters more. I felt like they needed to be more developed in order for me to really connect with them.

I recommend this book, just know what you're getting into or you may not enjoy it. It could go either way on the like or dislike scale.

Other:
The lovely illustrations by Maira Kalman add so much to the story and really help you picture more of the story. You get to see firsthand what Min found so important during her time with Ed a.k.a the jerk jock.

I was not a fan of how Min treated her mother. *possible spoiler* she actually called her mother stupid and said f*** her several times and for no apparent reason. Her mom just asked about wanting to meet Ed, yet throughout the very few interactions involving the mother, Min had nothing but extremely negative things to say. I need an explanation as to why that was. Just teenage angst? What? Without that explanation, I felt that Min was somewhat of a horrible human being so it was hard for me to like her that much.

Min's relationship with her best friend Al is pretty cute. You can clearly see why they're best friends. They're both huge movie buffs and just get along well. My beef though is how she handles certain situations with him. It seems like a jerk thing to do. The heart is a delicate thing, she should know. *shrug* Some conversations between them are weird is all I'm saying. Weird as in inhuman almost. Maybe I'm crazy?

Ed's mom - what's up with her? Is she sick? I don't get it. Not enough was explained about her. I have zero clue as to what is going on with her. It bothers me to the core. Almost as much as the Min-mom relationship.

The writing - some people strongly disliked the page long run-on sentences. I didn't have an issue with it, but many grammar "freaks" might have an issue getting through the book. Please also note that her voice, to me and many others apparently, seems unlike that of a junior in high school. Again, this wasn't an issue for me, but might be for you.

The big thing at the end, to me, came out of nowhere. Not completely out of nowhere, but somewhat out of nowhere. I was thinking "hmm that's a bit suspicious" when it came to a certain character, but I thought the way Ed thought of everything was out of nowhere. As his personality was explained, I didn't get a hint that he would act in certain ways. I guess that just shows you how things can be in real life though, which I liked even though I disliked that it occurred.

This whole week some friends and I are going to be on a mini road trip to nowhere in particular. We must make it back by the 1st because of work (bleh!) if not, we'd be gone for a bit longer. I doubt we'll make it far, but time away with friends is always fun.

Dexter - Season 6 finale

Hmmm um no! WHY ARE YOU GETTING FREUDIAN DANG IT?!!?!?! (Okay, somewhat Freudian.) Ugggggh I disapprove. By the by, that therapist is not following protocol when she "gently" suggests you-know-what. That, ladies and gents, is not how you ask a client a question.

And what is up with that IT guy? dot dot dot I feel like he's going to discover who Dexter really is in the next season. I'm wondering what will happen with the person who already discovered who he is though. That was some crazy shhhhtuff .

Misfits - Season/Series 3 finale

WTF???? Apparently Alisha and Simon are not going to be returning to the series. *dies inside* What is going on here? First Nathan and now Alisha and Simon?? I don't care that much about any other characters. How is the series going to survive? I'm so upset.

New Girl - Season 1, The 23rd (Ep 9)

Thoughts:
I don't love the cover, but I love that synopsis. I love love triangles heeheehee I always think "awww noooo!!" for the poor guy who ends up without the girl/guy, but it's all so fun and fangirly-inducing. ;) It also helps that people are saying great things about it:

Thoughts:
Oh oh oh this sounds FUN! I love reincarnation stories because I somewhat believe that is possible. This is different than what I believe, but it still sounds fun. Consider me curious! It's cool that it's a sequel even though I kind of hate series (I'm not a patient person you see). Doesn't that font remind you of something? I'm probably crazy because it looks different, but the feel reminds me of the covers for Alyson Noel's Immortals series.

PG-13 - Rated R: for very bloody and gory violence, crude language

Release Date: May 2011 (UK), no US release date (but available for $3 on youtube!)

Synopsis:
From the producers of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD comes ATTACK THE BLOCK, a fast funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It's inner city versus outer space.

Thoughts:
As the title says there is an attack on a block so don't expect this movie to be about an alien invasion all over the world. Just the block. Most of it is inside an apartment complex where it seems people are very heavy sleepers. It's hilarious because that part is so ridiculous. As I stated above, this movie can be considered rated-R for some because of a few scenes in which there is gory violence involving kids and aliens, so please be aware of that.
This is not your typical alien movie. It's fun, adventurous, humorous, suspenseful, and exciting. The beginning starts of slow then it picks up especially during the third half. I could not take my eyes of off the screen. I liked all the main characters because each and every one of them added something to the movie. They may not have been as fully developed as I'd like, but they were all memorable and likable. You will be rooting for these practically fearless kids. As for the aliens (not as many as I hoped by the by) - at first I thought I would dislike the effects, but I found myself being surprised in a good way. Plus, they actually scared me a bit.

Go watch it.

My thoughts on some of what I'm watching.

Misfits - Series/Season 3, ep 3 (UK)

Ahhh! I'm freaking out because I'm so happy that the new season has started. I LOVE this show. This is one of my all time favorite shows. It's kind of like Heroes (folks with superpowers), but with witty lines, great humor, and can'tstopwatching addictivness. If you haven't started watching this show. Get away from this site and watch it asap! I'll forgive you. Seriously. Go!

Thoughts so far: I miss Nathan something terrible. I deeply hated the stupid way they wrote him off. SIGH. I also feel as if Rudy, the new guy, has recycled Nathan lines. Still diggin' the show though.

Once Upon a Time, Season 1, ep 1 -3 (US)

Oh em gee! Pam (Eric Northman's "buddy") is in the 2nd ep!!! iii! hehe she's awesome. The world looks fantastic! I've seen better, but I still love the world building. The special effects are pretty lame, but I'll forgive that because the story is extremely enjoyable so far. The little boy is adorable! His voice is especially cute. You just wanna give him a huge hug. I love how psychology is (somewhat) implemented in the story. Recommended!! + the sheriff is so cute! Plus that accent!

Protect the Boss (South Korean)

I know, I know. I'm all late in this. I watched the first ep around the time it came out (premiered in August 2011) but it was slow so I didn't go back for months. Now I'm catching up. I'm on the 11 out of 18th ep. Fun fun fun!! Love triangle. Friendships. Action. Tough-as-nails protagonist. Feminism. Jaejoong. Jaejoong. Did I mention Jaejoong? He's from JYJ (used to be in DBSK). Saw him and the rest of JYJ at a concert a few months ago in California. Ahhhhh he's so cute. Yoochun is cuter of course.

If you haven't read Suzan Collin's The Hunger Games trilogy yet. You are missing out. It's violent, but important (the messages that come across are quite fascinating). There's non-stop action (for the most part) and it has a love triangle. How can you say "no"?

Not that he wants to talk about that.

But then Phillip meets Rebekah. Not only is she unconventionally hot and smart, but she has seriously great boobs. And she might like him back.

As Phillip gets closer to Rebekah, he tries harder and harder to turn himself into the kind of person he thinks she wants him to be. But the question is, can he become that person? And does he really want to?

Thoughts:

I'd much rather read/watch fantasy/sci-fi/adventerous stories instead of contemporary ones, but every now and then I get oh so curious by synopses such as the above.

Synopsis:

Thoughts:

This book is mainly about the insane and unfortunate role peer pressure plays in a person's life (with a dash of Groundhog Day to get the message across). Folks don't think about humanity at all. They don't realize that it's horrible to act a certain way towards others. Even if you're not being the bully, just letting the bully hurt others (emotionally or physically), you're still a part of it. Lauren Oliver manages to effectively pass this message on to readers. Unfortunately, while I liked aspects of the story, overall I wouldn't find myself re-reading this one or particularly recommending it.

Fancied:

I loved the italicized notes addressed to the readers. They really made you think more about yourself, the world, and the people in it. Even if you didn't/don't act like a total witch, a part of yourself (because we're human, we are all flawed), may still be able to relate to Sam or any of the other mean girls. Maybe you don't spend as much time with your parents, your siblings, or your family. Or maybe you treat others like dirt. Or at least, not as well as you should. Maybe you treat them well but you let others treat them badly. Or maybe you don't treat them well enough. Just keep on walking by because why is it your business?

Disliked:
As Sam re-lived Cupid Day over and over, it pretty much drove me nuts. Every day she re-lived that fateful day, I didn't feel like so much details needed to be re-told. It got annoying, real fast. The girl also made dumb decisions. Sigh. It's was just too much.
One major thing I strongly disliked was how sam didn't do anything about how her friends acted. If i were her, instead of doing what she did at the end (SERIOUSLY??!), I'd get to the root of the problem. I'd talk to freaking Lindsay! Geez! Is it THAT hard to at the very least talk to someone about being a bully? Freaking tell your "best friend", who you love, not to be an arse to someone else! All these mean girls most likely could have benifited from some therapy. Seriously. What happens in this book is that the protagonist completely sidesteps her major immoral flaws (and her best friends') and instead goes and attacks the "issue" a different way. Immensely ridiculous. At the end you're left wondering if the mean girls will still be mean or if they learned their lesson. It's honestly hard to tell. I never felt as if Sam changed at all as a person. At times she even continued to think the way she used to. She would still judge people by what they wore, she would still act like a witch, and she still continued to be selfish. One of the messages we are supposed to get at the end is that Sam changed. But she didn't. Or you know what? Maybe Lauren Oliver wasn't going for that? I'm thinking "out loud" here. If she wasn't going for that, that's interesting. Sam doesn't have to, by any means, change. That would be great. I love it when there's a twist and there is no positive moral in a story. That's always a surprise. Either way, I wasn't fascinated by this tale. What I do thank this book for is the following:

It strongly makes you think about what humanity (HUMANITY PEOPLE! HUMANITY!!) is all about these days. People forget that we're only here in this life for a short while (even if you believe in heaven or reincarnation or whatever you're in this particular life right now) with uncertainty about what happens after (even if your beliefs are strong about the afterlife, you should take this life seriously). What's the point in taking your anger out on others when you can live peacefully with them? Doesn't it feel great and wonderful to be nice to people? To say hello to a total stranger and have them say hello back? To pick up something someone dropped and hear the words "thank you" and say the words "you're welcome" with an honest and genuine smile? Doesn't it feel amazing inside when you can share laughs with those you care about? To think there could be more of those people. All around you. But we just walk on by. Or we hurt them. Thoughts:
Are you serious Ms. Young? This is your first book? It's incredibly hard to believe because this book was just so darn good! I have not read a book I gave five stars in a while and the reason I gave BLOOD RED ROAD five stars is because it had everything I love: great writing, pages that can't be turned fast enough, great characters, cheesy lines from a guy wooing a girl, action, adventure, dystopian world, fighting, monsters, action, action, and action! Seriously, it practically never stopped being full of something that kept you reading until the wee hours of the next morning (I only had four hours of sleep because of midterms and instead of sleeping, I kept reading). Now that's a book you want to pick up.
The only issues that I really had with this book is that the beginning was somewhat slow for me and I found Saba's immensely strong attachment to her twin brother, Lugh, a bit odd, and I strongly disliked her anger towards her sister. I can see why she was so cruel to her sister, but I certainly didn't like it. Those kind of words to a 9 year old (and to hear them all her life) are psychologically damaging, I'm surprised poor Emmi wasn't damaged in the head.

Love story:
The love story is a side story. really cute cheesy lines from the male love interest. I did take note that another character is "beautiful" and quite the curious character. I also noticed how he said "until next time" (highlight to view because it's spoiler-y). He had a way about him and I feel he'll be coming back to play a large role in Saba's life. I hope there's a love triangle hehe I'm such a dork when it comes to these things.
I wasn't a fan of how the book ended in terms of the love story (and overall), but at the same time I loved it. I disliked how things played out. It felt like there wasn't much feeling to it. What I loved was how it didn't end in one of those crazy cliffhangers that makes you dislike the author a bit because you have to wait months or years for the sequel to be released. For that, I thank you so very much Ms. Young. And for the great story of course (that's a given).

Writing style:
I haven't come across writing style like this in a while and hardly ever in YA. The author writes the book in the point of view of an uneducated 18 year old so most of it is written in a phonetic type of style (ex: 33 Snowfish and Pygmalion). I can understand how some readers will very much dislike this especially if they're sticklers of grammar and spelling or have never been exposed to writings where the author writes phonetically throughout the whole book. I love it because you really get to hear Saba and the others talking. If you don't think your'e into that, you might have a tough time, but I implore you to stick to the story, because it's wonderfully fun.

The fun I had:

One of my best bud's is the one driving. I'm the one falling asleep on the right. We went on a mini road trip to San Antonio for a halloween party. Yay! Three hrs drive. Fun!! But I fell asleep...

Author Interview Time!! Please welcome the author, Justin Dennis, of Through the Portal. Book #1 in the Through the Portal Trilogy.

Book synopsis:
What's the worst part of falling through a portal to another world and not being able to get back? When the first person you meet almost gets you killed by a ferocious, fire-breathing dragon. Luckily, Jem and Oliver, two boys who were about to start their first year in high school, are saved by Sierra, a farm girl who is itching to get out of her small town. Together, the three of them set off on a quest to defeat the evil Veroci Regime that is stealing all the magic from the world, but can they do it before the Dragon catches up with them?

What inspired you to write this book?

Well I've always loved the idea of going to other worlds that have their own story, plus I love Young Adult/Fantasy books. I felt as if the genre was missing something; like their were more worlds to go to and even greater themes to delve into! And of course there always will be more to dig into, but I felt like by writing this book I was fulfilling my part as an author to supply readers with new and interesting ideas. I love to write, and I've always had these ideas floating around in my head--this book was just a great way to lay it all out!

What would you do if you fell through a portal to another world and were unable to get back?

Really, I'd have fun. I don't know what could be more fun! That would be such a once in a lifetime opportunity that I would have to revel in it. Go explore, meet people, solve some mysteries... save the world!

What's the best thing a reader said about your book or something you wish a reader said/felt when reading your book?

The best thing I've heard is that the dialogue between Jem and Oliver is funny. That may not be a huge thing to readers, but to me it was great to hear that my book, which isn't anywhere near a comedy, at least has some witty comedic value. As for what I hope people will feel when reading my book.. I hope they can learn something or relate to something. There are important themes in there and difficult choices that characters have to make. If I can make you feel something strong, I've done my job.

Are there any T.V shows or songs that remind you of your book?

Avatar: The Last Bender actually reminds me somewhat of my book. None of the characters specifically really, but just the world that it takes place in. It has some similarities to the world I've created, but in many ways it's very different. I love that show though, quality writing.

What's something silly about you (your eyes twitch right before you sneeze or maybe you collect bunny slippers)?

Hmm, I don't have any bunny slippers, but I've got neon orange slippers that I've gotten some weird looks for wearing in public!

What's one (or some) of your all-time favorite book (s) and why?

I love, love, love the Harry Potter Series. I'm sure lots of people say this but it's only risen to that level of popular because it is such high quality literary work. It's so much more than a children's novel. It delves into very complex plots, has incredible symbolism, and thought-provoking themes. I would also have to say the His Dark Materials Trilogy for similar reasons. Intricate plot, great characters, plus I love Pullman's creation of "daemons."

Are you working on anything else right now (a book, setting up a bookshelf, etc.)?

Yes, I'm writing the second book in my trilogy right now. I haven't decided on a title, and I don't know when it will be finished (sorry!) but I'm definitely working on it at every opportunity I get! Not a whole lot of free time for anything else.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?

Just remember to eat your veggies, push in your chairs, be nice to your Barista (if you go to Starbucks every morning you know what I'm talking about), and read a lot. If you like to write, write a lot. About anything and every. Get all your ideas down. You never know when you may want to develop one or multiple of them into a story. Oh, and flush public toilets. Really, that's just common courtesy. Please.

Puss in Boots (2011) // Movie Review

The film is a spinoff prequel to the Shrek series and it follows the character Puss in Boots on his adventures before his first appearance in Shrek 2 in 2004. Accompanied by his sidekicks, Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws, Puss is pitted against Jack and Jill, two murderous outlaws who discover an ancient power which threatens the world.

Thoughts:
I got the chance to see Puss in Boots last week, which is somewhat of a spin-off from the Shrek movies. I expected the same humor and similar storyline and of course, there it was. It's quite the enjoyable movie and not only is it humorous (the dancing scenes were the funniest to me, especially that random cat saying "oooh" so watch out for that), but it also has an unexpected (because of the marketing) story about friendship and family. I loved the friendship, but at the same time hated it because of the way it's all wrapped up neatly. Hard to explain without spoilers so I apologize for not going into detail about that.
I highly recommend this movie especially for the kids. I took my 10 and 8 year old cousins to see this and they loved it. My sister (21) and I (20), enjoyed it as well, so I'm sure some adults will feel the same way.
Don't expect a lot of depth towards the end, but do expect it when they're talking about Humpty. To me, this movie was more about him than anyone else. You really got to learn who he was and why he made the choices he made. Puss and Kitty Softpaws were not as developed as I hoped, but they were still amusing, especially together. I had hoped their relationship had been more developed like Shrek and Fiona. I also wish there was more background on Jack and Jill, but there wasn't. I did kind of like their messed up relationship though. Shrug.
What I liked best about the movie was the adventure in the giant's castle. That was immensely fun and the bit where the voices change (because of the thin air up in those clouds high, high above) was hilarious and now I miss it. I liked it that much. Plus, it looked very cool.

3D:
The movie was in 3D, which in the beginning was WONDERFUL. The audience gets to see this beautiful landscape and follows along as the camera zooms over these detailed canyons and world that leads to where Puss is. Other than that, the 3D didn't stand out for me.

Blerg. It's starting off excruciatingly slow (for me). I'm starting to not care.

Dexter - Season 6, Ep 4

It's becoming clearer and clearer that faith is becoming more of an issue in Dexter's life. Interesting. I love how each season there's a major topic that's delved into. I especially love how Dexter's a loving father. This is progress in terms of his Dark Passenger. Fascinating.

But. The momentum is missing this season. So far anyway. When will it begin??!

The Walking Dead - Season 2, Ep 2

Ah! The first episode was wonderful, but the second ep was not so great. Slow and boring. Didn't care for it.

My friends and I are also on the run from an evil corporation that wants to get rid of us…permanently.
Definitely not normal.
And finally, I’m a genetically altered necromancer who can raise the dead, rotting corpses and all, without even trying.
As far away from normal as it gets.

Thoughts:

I love Chloe's voice. She sounds so much like the average girl. I also really like the story. This series is one I would recommend especially to those in middle school who like the supernatural with a bit on the realistic side. The story touches on teenage angst and what the frack you would have to deal with if you were a genetically altered necromancer. Or werewolf. Or witch. Or... you get the idea.

My main beef with this book is that the story does not get as developed as much as I would have liked. Other than that, I really liked the book. It was cute, full of action, had suspense, and kept me from doing much else until I was finished. Admittedly, I didn't mind getting a break now and then (especially when it got slow as the supernatural kids on the run were doing nothing but "planning" - could have been shorter I think). A nice and entertaining ending, but sadly not blow-my-mind amazing like I was hoping.

TV: Dexter, The Walking Dead, & Big Bang

Dexter - Season 6

This show is starting off slow for me. It doesn't help that Collin's character isn't blowing me away. I saw the preview after the last episode and it looks like it's going to pick up by the next one (significantly so). I can't wait! I hope I'm not disappointed. I'm going nuts here waiting for that feeling I got watching the second half of season 1, all of season 2, and season 5. Now THAT is TV! I want to get that feeling where I am about to burst with suspense that I have to pause the show to take a breather because it's just that intense. Patience, patience.

The Walking Dead - Season 2 (remember, this time it's 13 eps long!!!!)

Holy chipotle sauce!! The first episode was MIND BLOWING (pun totally intended)!! I was watching it with my sister in between classes (we could not wait another second) and we both freaked out with nerves as we were watching it. This season started off very well, fast paced, and nail bitingly amazing. I'm going crazy having to wait a whole entire week for the second episode. I knew that something like that would happen (avoiding spoilers here), but it still freaked me out. I had to pause the ep at a certain point because I was freaking out (so was my sister). We really needed to take a breather. I'm telling you - INTENSE!

Big Bang Theory - Season 5

This season is also starting off pretty slowly. The last season didn't blow me away. I'm still looking forward to the rest of the seasons, but I'm not jumping up and down with excitement about it. That makes me extremely sad because I love Sheldon/Jim Parsons (a fellow Houstonian!).

Thoughts:

This one is a lot more bloody and gory than the first. Things start to get slightly more "real" for the small amount of people left. They have to, as before, fight for their survival. Unlike the previous book (what a GREAT start), this one is really slow and was hard for me to get through. I expected non-stop action/misadventure as these kids fight to save their lives, but instead we get a bunch of planning and hiding. I'm sorry, but that bored the heck out of me. Come on James, step it up. Please, please, have the third book blow me away like the first book did. There were a few "scenes" with the Cravers/zombies and a few with new monsters/creations that were very fun/nail biting, but sadly, this only occurred about a handful of times. I'm the type of person that likes these "scenes" to happen often. That's just my personal preference. At the very least, I prefer there not to be anything slow going on.

I recommend you guys skim often and understand that things get a bit boring in this one. Another thing that irked me was all those unanswered questions (some of which still don't get answered). It was unnerving. I get that the reader is supposed to feel as lost as the characters, but sometimes it was just too much for me to be okay with. Even though I found it to be slow and slightly annoying, the last third of the book is very suspenseful and full of action/misadventures. I could not flip the pages fast enough then. It was wonderful (even though it was kind of scary and nail-biting). If you haven't begun this series yet, I highly recommend it.

I'm immensely excited to read the last book in this series!

Real Steel // Movie Review

Background:
Based on the short story by Richard Matheson - later adapted into the Twilight Zone episode "Steel."

Synopsis:

Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his -- son Max to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Thoughts:
I took my 9 year old cousin to see this one thinking he would love it, and sure enough he did. I honestly didn't expect it to be my kind of movie, but I actually found myself enjoying it. I'm not the type to like watching any type of sport (playing them is a different story - and yes, I suck at everything except foosball, but that's not really a sport and I can hit a baseball somewhat well), especially not boxing. In this movie, it's robot boxing which honestly makes it a lot easier to watch (especially if you get queasy when humans fight). I though the robots were AMAZING (they are a mix of real live robots and CGI)! If you have a little boy in your life, you must take him to see this! I don't know if girls will like this one, depends on what they like, but this movie is very exciting (it will have you biting your nails like my cousin and thinking "who's going to win??!! who's going to win?!") and has a story about a man who does not want to be a father (to him, it's too late to start). I'm sure you know where the storyline will go, but the trip there is a recommended watch.

The next new ep of New Girl will be in two weeks (Nov. 1) instead of, well, yesterday. Grr.

Thanks X Factor. For absolutely nothing. (I want to see if New Girl will develop into something extremely awesome!)

What will tide me over? Oh yes, THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 2 (13 episodes!!) heck yeeeees!!!!! I LOVE this realistic zombie show. It's great & wonderful (in a horror-like way). What will happen this next season?? Hmmm.

Starts this Sunday, October 16 at AMC. :)

If you haven't started this series. You really need to catch up. It's great. I'm telling you. If you like zombies, intense scenes (with zombies!!!), and a realistic story about what would happen if there were a zombie apocalypse, then this is the show for you. First season, sadly has 6 episodes, but on the brightside, it will be easier to catch up. Excited!! :)

T.V: Gushing/Complaining About What I'm Watching

True Blood - Season 4 (spoiler alert):

Okay, the season ended recently. What did you guys think? I thought it was so so. I was expecting much more from the story and the relationships between the characters. I loved how Eric Northman/Alexandar Skarsgard (*melts*) was in this season. Just like in the books, he seemingly changed because of having his memory erased. Sookie: she sucks. Ah, she's so darn boring!! I must say, I did like the decision she made at the end, even though I kinda hated it as well. She could have handled it a little better. Breaking hearts should be gentler. That's all I'm saying. Alcide: didn't all the marketing stuff for season 4 lead us to believe that something would happen with Alcide? At least, something semi-big? Well wtfrack??! I get that it seems he has feelings for her, but that didn't actually get developed any more than it did in the last season. What a dry storyline. Marnie: She was interesting I must say. Poor chick. Still, I wasn't that intrigued. In my opinion, she seemed like she was thrown in there which kinda defeats the whole purpose of witchcraft being a major part of this season. I wonder what will come out of the hat next season. Please writers, puh-lease give me something mind-boggling, full of action, and exciting.

Vampire Diaries - Season 3 (spoiler alert):

I love to hate Klaus ;) Okay, I'm liking the new season so far. The first episode did not wow me and was slow, but the second episode won me over (that cliffhanger ending!). This made me laugh so much (it was cute and unexpected):

New Girl - Season One:

That was my favorite part in the first episode. HILARIOUS and adorable. I love dorks/nerds/geeks so Zooey Dechane's character makes me especially happy in this new show. I hope it goes on for a long time and that it goes in a great direction. Here's hoping. Can't wait for episode 3!

Awkward. - Season One:

I can't stop watching this MTV (post-music videos) show. It's so intriguing and the main reason I watch it is because of the hilarious, quirky, and cute guidance counselor:

It doesn't hurt that the awkward situations are actually interesting. Sure, the protagonist needs to grow some, but either way, my point stands. I recommend it, but don't expect great characterization or an out of this world storyline. And don't expect to love the protagonist. She can make such stupid decisions. It's human, which is a good thing (we all make mistakes), but gosh sometimes she jumps to conclusions and ruins it all for herself (she's evil! it was obviously her fault not his!! ahhh!! EHEM). Meh, overall it's entertaining and that's enough for me. By the by, MTV's Awkward. website has ALL of the full eps for your viewing pleasure.

Thoughts:

I was really excited about this new series when I first heard that Richelle Mead (her Vampire Academy series is so fun!) was writing an eight novel series that's a spinoff of Vampire Academy. This new series, Bloodlines, will focus on the alchemists. Our protagonist this time around will be Sydney and some of the main to secondary characters from VA will show up in this as well (!!). One of those guys is Adrian and whoa you have no idea how excited I am about that. We will surely get to know him more and read more of his snarky remarks in addition to finding out how he's taking …everything.

You're probably wondering why I only liked this book and didn't love it. The reason for that is that as with many new series, the first book is always the background book. There's a lot of information overload (and mystery) in this one that even though I enjoyed it, I just couldn't help but get anxious for the action to kick in. VA was very much about the action and romance. This one, not so much. Understandable though considering it is the first book, but I was still not fully satisfied and could have been (uh, VA #1 was addictive from the first page!). The first half of the book could have been shorter and the second half could have been longer. I LOVE fights/adventures/action scenes. You know that will be in the series and it's good, but in this book, it wasn't great. I just found it to be predictable and that bothered me. I'm still a huge fan of Richelle Mead and will be reading the other seven books in this series, but I sure hope she can up this. The way she writes causes the readers to see everything in their heads and it all looks just like a movie. Can't help but love that. In addition to that she sure knows how to bring her characters to life with more than just a spark. Everyone has their own personality and their own background (for the most part) and now I can't wait to "see" them all again. As always, I'm very curious about the guys in this one, especially the new ones popping up or re-appearing. I'm also curious about what Sydney will do in regards to her future and also in regards to her father. Hopefully she can try to not want his approval so much. He's a jerk, he doesn't deserve it.

Thoughts:
You see how on the synopsis it describes what Kristina Georgia Snow is like? I honestly don't get that impression from her when I read about her. I felt as if I didn't really get to know Kristina Snow at all. Sure there are a few snippets here and there, but I didn't feel it was enough to get to know her as a person.
Hmm very fast paced as usual with Ellen Hopkins (especially with how well the prose flows), but the story itself, did not fascinate me as much as Burned and Impulse did. I'm still very, very curious about the next books in the series (I even started reading Glass already so that tells you something). I liked how you could really get into Kristina/Bree's head (by the by, Kristina does not have a Dissociative Identity Disorder, she just acts braver by telling others her name is Bree and basically becomes a whole other person) and can see what she's going through and what other people who've met the monster (crank/meth) have gone through. It's one fascinating/sad/intense roller coaster that's hard to stay away from. For that reason, I liked the book/story, but because it just wasn't my cup of tea, I couldn't find myself loving it.

T.V: The Secret Circle // Thoughts & Soundtrack

So, what were your first impressions of last week's premiere of The Secret Circle based on L.J Smith's series?

I for one, liked it, especially the music. I was not a huge fan of the plot, but I am still intrigued enough to watch the second episode today and so on. I'm not jumping for joy over it, but consider me a watcher of this new show. I'm a sucker for the supernatural (speaking of which, can't wait for the next season of Supernatural tomorrow, but first I need to catch up...).

Stuff:
The main guy, Adam, ahhh he ruined John Connor for me, but I did like him on Heroes (this actor also worked with the actress [in Heroes] that portrays the grandmother, which is pretty coolio I think). As for the peeping tom next door. Ah come on, seriously people?? No, just no. He looks like he time-traveled from the 90's.

Victor hates his life. He has no friends, gets beaten up at school, and his parents are always criticizing him. Tired of feeling miserable, Victor takes a bottle of his mother's sleeping pills—only to wake up in the hospital.

Bull is angry, and takes all of his rage out on Victor. That makes him feel better, at least a little. But it doesn't stop Bull's grandfather from getting drunk and hitting him. So Bull tries to defend himself with a loaded gun.

When Victor and Bull end up as roommates in the same psych ward, there's no way to escape each other or their problems. Which means things are going to get worse—much worse—before they get better….

Sounds very, very interesting and like my kind of read.
