Thoughts:
I don't love the cover, but I love that synopsis. I love love triangles heeheehee I always think "awww noooo!!" for the poor guy who ends up without the girl/guy, but it's all so fun and fangirly-inducing. ;) It also helps that people are saying great things about it:

"I've had the privilege of reading a pre-publication manuscript and can tell you this book, Halflings, will not disappoint. Fast paced, strong plot, and compelling characters make this a to-read selection. I Love Halflings!"
-Diane

"The descriptive scenes she painted in my mind still remain very vivid ! I didn't want to read several hours at a time but very hard to find a good place to stop, needless to say any more but I promise you it's a page turner.ENJOY !!"

Waiting On: The Alchemy of Forever (Incarnation #1) by Avery Williams

The Alchemy of Forever (Incarnation #1) by Avery Williams

RD: January 3, 2012. Click cover to add to goodreads.

People say ‘love never dies’… but love might be the death of Seraphina. Seraphina has been alive since the Middle Ages, when her boyfriend, Cyrus, managed to perfect a method of alchemy that lets them swap bodies with any human being. Sera ran away from Cyrus years ago, when she realized that what they were doing—taking the lives of innocent people—was wrong. She doesn’t want to die, so she finds young people who are on the brink of death, and inhabits their bodies. When we meet Sera, she has landed in the body of a girl named Kailey who was about to die in a car accident. For the first time, Sera falls in love with the life of the person she’s inhabiting. Sera also falls for the boy next door, Noah. And soon it’s clear the feelings are returned. Unfortunately, she can never kiss Noah, because for her to touch lips with a human would mean the human’s death. And she has even more to worry about: Cyrus is chasing her, and if she stays in one place for long, she puts herself—and the people she’s grown to care for—in danger.

Thoughts:
Oh oh oh this sounds FUN! I love reincarnation stories because I somewhat believe that is possible. This is different than what I believe, but it still sounds fun. Consider me curious! It's cool that it's a sequel even though I kind of hate series (I'm not a patient person you see). Doesn't that font remind you of something? I'm probably crazy because it looks different, but the feel reminds me of the covers for Alyson Noel's Immortals series.

Attack the Block (UK) // Movie Review

Rating: 4/5 stars; Really liked it.

PG-13 - Rated R: for very bloody and gory violence, crude language

Release Date: May 2011 (UK), no US release date (but available for $3 on youtube!)

Synopsis:
From the producers of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD comes ATTACK THE BLOCK, a fast funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It's inner city versus outer space.

Thoughts:
As the title says there is an attack on a block so don't expect this movie to be about an alien invasion all over the world. Just the block. Most of it is inside an apartment complex where it seems people are very heavy sleepers. It's hilarious because that part is so ridiculous. As I stated above, this movie can be considered rated-R for some because of a few scenes in which there is gory violence involving kids and aliens, so please be aware of that.
This is not your typical alien movie. It's fun, adventurous, humorous, suspenseful, and exciting. The beginning starts of slow then it picks up especially during the third half. I could not take my eyes of off the screen. I liked all the main characters because each and every one of them added something to the movie. They may not have been as fully developed as I'd like, but they were all memorable and likable. You will be rooting for these practically fearless kids. As for the aliens (not as many as I hoped by the by) - at first I thought I would dislike the effects, but I found myself being surprised in a good way. Plus, they actually scared me a bit.

Go watch it.

"I Don't Want To Be a Bride" by Vanessa Carlton

Found: Spotify when her new album came out
Thoughts: I don't particularly care for the lyrics. I don't disagree or agree, I just don't care, but I love the song anyway. oh I remember liking her music when I was in elementary/middle school. how she could play that piano in "A Thousand Miles" hehe

"Eyes Closed" by The Narrative

Found: friend's recommendation
Thoughts: just my kind of song. slow and I like the guitar use. the woman's voice goes so well with the guy's even though I don't love the guy's voice. cute/sweet lyrics.

check this out from their site - so cute! -

"The Narrative members Suzie Zeldin (Keys/Vocals) and Jesse Gabriel (Guitar/Vocals) grew up around the block from each other and didn't even know it. That is of course until a Craigslist musicians ad brought the two together over some highly mediocre New York pizza. They soon found out that not only did they attend the same high school, but they shared the same passions for music.

The two spent the next couple of years in Suzie's cramped Upper West Side apartment crafting songs that would become the Just Say Yes EP, which was released in 2008 to critical acclaim. In the Summer of 2010, The Narrative followed this by releasing their self-titled first full length album which also received an overwhelmingly positive response."

I asked her if a man should steal medicine he can't afford for his dying wife and she said 'he should just borrow money from the bank' and I told her the man could not get money from the bank and she just said 'oh lord Jesus.'"

In My Mailbox: Saints

What I got recently...

For Review:
RD: January 2012

Mary Saint, the rule-breaking, troubled former lead singer of the almost-famous band Sliced Ham, has pretty much given up on music after the trauma of her band member and lover Garbagio's death seven years earlier. Instead, with the help of her best friend, Thaddeus, she is trying to piece her life together while making mochaccinos in San Francisco. Meanwhile, back in her hometown of Swallow, New York, her mother, Jean Saint, struggles with her own ghosts.

When Mary is invited to give a concert at her old high school, Jean is thrilled, though she's worried about what Father Benedict and her neighbors will think of songs such as "Sewer Flower" and "You're a Pig." But she soon realizes that there are going to be bigger problems when the whole town--including a discouraged teacher and a baker who's anything but sweet--gets in on the act.

Filled with characters that are wild and original, yet still familiar and warm--plus plenty of great insider winks at the music industry--Wayward Saints is a touching and hilarious look at confronting your past and going home again.

T.V: Misfits (!!), Once Upon A Time, & Protect the Boss

My thoughts on some of what I'm watching.

Misfits - Series/Season 3, ep 3 (UK)

Ahhh! I'm freaking out because I'm so happy that the new season has started. I LOVE this show. This is one of my all time favorite shows. It's kind of like Heroes (folks with superpowers), but with witty lines, great humor, and can'tstopwatching addictivness. If you haven't started watching this show. Get away from this site and watch it asap! I'll forgive you. Seriously. Go!
Thoughts so far: I miss Nathan something terrible. I deeply hated the stupid way they wrote him off. SIGH. I also feel as if Rudy, the new guy, has recycled Nathan lines. Still diggin' the show though.

Once Upon a Time, Season 1, ep 1 -3 (US)

Oh em gee! Pam (Eric Northman's "buddy") is in the 2nd ep!!! iii! hehe she's awesome. The world looks fantastic! I've seen better, but I still love the world building. The special effects are pretty lame, but I'll forgive that because the story is extremely enjoyable so far. The little boy is adorable!  His voice is especially cute. You just wanna give him a huge hug. I love how psychology is (somewhat) implemented in the story. Recommended!! + the sheriff is so cute! Plus that accent!

Protect the Boss (South Korean)

I know, I know. I'm all late in this. I watched the first ep around the time it came out (premiered in August 2011) but it was slow so I didn't go back for months. Now I'm catching up. I'm on the 11 out of 18th ep. Fun fun fun!! Love triangle. Friendships. Action. Tough-as-nails protagonist. Feminism. Jaejoong. Jaejoong. Did I mention Jaejoong? He's from JYJ (used to be in DBSK). Saw him and the rest of JYJ at a concert a few months ago in California. Ahhhhh he's so cute. Yoochun is cuter of course.

The Hunger Games Trailer (not teaser)

Ah! It looks SO good! I'm gonna go crazy waiting for it.

If you haven't read Suzan Collin's The Hunger Games trilogy yet. You are missing out. It's violent, but important (the messages that come across are quite fascinating). There's non-stop action (for the most part) and it has a love triangle. How can you say "no"?

Waiting On: Everything You Need to Survive the Apocalypse by Luca Klauss

Everything You Need to Survive the Apocalypse by Lucas Klauss

RD: January 3, 2012. Click cover to add to goodreads.

Phillip's sophomore year is off to a rough start. One of his best friends ditches him for a group of douchebags. His track coach singles him out for personalized, torturous training sessions. And his dad decides to clean out all of the emergency supplies from the basement, even though the world could end in disaster at any moment...and even though those supplies are all Phillip has left of his dead mom. Not that he wants to talk about that.
But then Phillip meets Rebekah. Not only is she unconventionally hot and smart, but she has seriously great boobs. And she might like him back.
As Phillip gets closer to Rebekah, he tries harder and harder to turn himself into the kind of person he thinks she wants him to be. But the question is, can he become that person? And does he really want to?

Thoughts:
I'd much rather read/watch fantasy/sci-fi/adventerous stories instead of contemporary ones, but every now and then I get oh so curious by synopses such as the above.

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver // Book Review

Rating: 3/5; It was okay.

Release Date: March 2010

Synopsis:

What if you had only one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?
Samantha Kingston has it all: the world's most crush-worthy boyfriend, three amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High—from the best table in the cafeteria to the choicest parking spot. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life.
Instead, it turns out to be her last.
Then she gets a second chance. Seven chances, in fact. Reliving her last day during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death—and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.
Thoughts:
This book is mainly about the insane and unfortunate role peer pressure plays in a person's life (with a dash of Groundhog Day to get the message across). Folks don't think about humanity at all. They don't realize that it's horrible to act a certain way towards others. Even if you're not being the bully, just letting the bully hurt others (emotionally or physically), you're still a part of it. Lauren Oliver manages to effectively pass this message on to readers. Unfortunately, while I liked aspects of the story, overall I wouldn't find myself re-reading this one or particularly recommending it.
Fancied:
I loved the italicized notes addressed to the readers. They really made you think more about yourself, the world, and the people in it. Even if you didn't/don't act like a total witch, a part of yourself (because we're human, we are all flawed), may still be able to relate to Sam or any of the other mean girls. Maybe you don't spend as much time with your parents, your siblings, or your family. Or maybe you treat others like dirt. Or at least, not as well as you should. Maybe you treat them well but you let others treat them badly. Or maybe you don't treat them well enough. Just keep on walking by because why is it your business?
Disliked:
As Sam re-lived Cupid Day over and over, it pretty much drove me nuts. Every day she re-lived that fateful day, I didn't feel like so much details needed to be re-told. It got annoying, real fast. The girl also made dumb decisions. Sigh. It's was just too much.
One major thing I strongly disliked was how sam didn't do anything about how her friends acted. If i were her, instead of doing what she did at the end (SERIOUSLY??!), I'd get to the root of the problem. I'd talk to freaking Lindsay! Geez! Is it THAT hard to at the very least talk to someone about being a bully? Freaking tell your "best friend", who you love, not to be an arse to someone else! All these mean girls most likely could have benifited from some therapy. Seriously. What happens in this book is that the protagonist completely sidesteps her major immoral flaws (and her best friends') and instead goes and attacks the "issue" a different way. Immensely ridiculous. At the end you're left wondering if the mean girls will still be mean or if they learned their lesson. It's honestly hard to tell.
I never felt as if Sam changed at all as a person. At times she even continued to think the way she used to. She would still judge people by what they wore, she would still act like a witch, and she still continued to be selfish. One of the messages we are supposed to get at the end is that Sam changed. But she didn't. Or you know what? Maybe Lauren Oliver wasn't going for that? I'm thinking "out loud" here. If she wasn't going for that, that's interesting. Sam doesn't have to, by any means, change. That would be great. I love it when there's a twist and there is no positive moral in a story. That's always a surprise. Either way, I wasn't fascinated by this tale. What I do thank this book for is the following:

It strongly makes you think about what humanity (HUMANITY PEOPLE! HUMANITY!!) is all about these days. People forget that we're only here in this life for a short while (even if you believe in heaven or reincarnation or whatever you're in this particular life right now) with uncertainty about what happens after (even if your beliefs are strong about the afterlife, you should take this life seriously). What's the point in taking your anger out on others when you can live peacefully with them? Doesn't it feel great and wonderful to be nice to people? To say hello to a total stranger and have them say hello back? To pick up something someone dropped and hear the words "thank you" and say the words "you're welcome" with an honest and genuine smile? Doesn't it feel amazing inside when you can share laughs with those you care about? To think there could be more of those people. All around you. But we just walk on by. Or we hurt them. Or we look at them like they're dressed in a bad way because we think that's cool. Life is pathetic when one does that, is it not? Pointless even. It's good to stop to think about how much better life could be if we could all just get along. And it's even better to stop and be better people.

Okay, I'll stop there. I'm getting all ranty.

Quotes:

"A good friend keeps your secrets for you. A best friend helps you keep your own secrets."

That up there was a great example of the crap philosophy these girls are (I'm hesitant to say "were") living by. They're talking about keeping a secret regarding an unhealthy, possibly deadly, habit.

(About her 8 yr old sister not matching clothes)
"I guess Izzy doesn't care. That's another thing that strikes me as funny: that my eight-year-old sister is braver than I am. She's probably braver than most of the people at Thomas Jefferson. I wonder if that will ever change, if it will get beaten out of her."

That quote speaks volumes in my humble opinion.

"I'm starved for a different light, a different sun, different sky. I've never really thought about it before, but it's a miracle how many kinds of light there are in the world, how many skies: the pale brightness of spring, when it feels like the whole world is blushing; the lush, bright boldness of a July noon; purple storm skies and a green queasiness just before lightning strikes and crazy multicolored sunsets that look like someone's acid trip."

I liked that quote. The acid part I could have done without, but I don't mind it too much.

Further Rants:
Izzy, the younger sister, acts more like a 5 year old than her actual age of 8. It got on my nerves. Eek!
Possible spoiler so highlight to view -
And about Kent. Dang. That is messed up of Sam. She does state that she didn't mean to hurt him, but seriously girl, seriously??

Resembles:

mean girls. movie. the clique of mean, damaged girls that want to damage others.
groundhog day. movie.  the re-play of the same day. over. and over. and over.

Thank you so much Lissa (check out her site, she has lovely, creative art)! She was kind enough to send the above dramas to me. It was his first Korean TV show/drama just like me and he fell in love! heehee we're suckers for romances. If you saw/knew him you'd be really surprised by this.), one of my best friends, her sister, and her cousin. Yup. Been watched and loved a lot. Check out my thoughts on it like Lissa did - that's what got her hooked on You're Beautiful and now you can be hooked as well :D Don't say I didn't warn you. T.V: The Walking Dead, New Girl & Glee (free online ep!)

My thoughts on recent eps. Beware of spoilers if you're not caught up!

The Walking Dead - Season 2, ep 3

NOOOOOOOO!!!! Curses! He's officially immoral now :'( I was hoping he would redeem himself.

New Girl - Season 1, ep 3

The travel sized spirit stick was hilarious and so was "I accidentally saw his peepee and his...bubbles" hahahaha so much like an elementary school teacher

Waiting on Wednesday: Awkward by Marni Bates

Release Date: December 27, 2011 - click cover to add to goodreads tbr list

I'm Mackenzie Wellesley, and I've spent my life avoiding the spotlight. But that was four million hits ago. . .
Blame it on that grade school ballet recital, when I tripped and pulled the curtain down, only to reveal my father kissing my dance instructor. At Smith High, I'm doing a pretty good job of being the awkward freshman people only notice when they need help with homework. Until I send a burly football player flying with my massive backpack, and make a disastrous--not to mention unwelcome--attempt at CPR. Just when I think it's time for home schooling, the whole fiasco explodes on Youtube. And then the strangest thing happens. Suddenly, I'm the latest sensation, sucked into a whirlwind of rock stars, paparazzi, and free designer clothes. I even catch the eye of the most popular guy at school. That's when life gets really interesting. . ..
"Fans of Meg Cabot will find Marni's voice equally charming and endearing."--Julie Kagawa, New York Times bestselling author
Marni Bates alternates her time between her home in Ashland, Oregon, and Lewis & Clark College. When not studying or writing, she can be found rollerblading, bargaining at garage sales, and watching copious amounts of TV--strictly for artistic inspiration, of course.

My thoughts:
Sounds fun and does remind me a bit of Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries , which I love!

WoW is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine

Thoughts:
Are you serious Ms. Young? This is your first book? It's incredibly hard to believe because this book was just so darn good! I have not read a book I gave five stars in a while and the reason I gave BLOOD RED ROAD five stars is because it had everything I love: great writing, pages that can't be turned fast enough, great characters, cheesy lines from a guy wooing a girl, action, adventure, dystopian world, fighting, monsters, action, action, and action! Seriously, it practically never stopped being full of something that kept you reading until the wee hours of the next morning (I only had four hours of sleep because of midterms and instead of sleeping, I kept reading). Now that's a book you want to pick up.
The only issues that I really had with this book is that the beginning was somewhat slow for me and I found Saba's immensely strong attachment to her twin brother, Lugh, a bit odd, and I strongly disliked her anger towards her sister. I can see why she was so cruel to her sister, but I certainly didn't like it. Those kind of words to a 9 year old (and to hear them all her life) are psychologically damaging, I'm surprised poor Emmi wasn't damaged in the head.

Love story:
The love story is a side story. really cute cheesy lines from the male love interest. I did take note that another character is "beautiful" and quite the curious character. I also noticed how he said "until next time" (highlight to view because it's spoiler-y). He had a way about him and I feel he'll be coming back to play a large role in Saba's life. I hope there's a love triangle hehe I'm such a dork when it comes to these things.
I wasn't a fan of how the book ended in terms of the love story (and overall), but at the same time I loved it. I disliked how things played out. It felt like there wasn't much feeling to it. What I loved was how it didn't end in one of those crazy cliffhangers that makes you dislike the author a bit because you have to wait months or years for the sequel to be released. For that, I thank you so very much Ms. Young. And for the great story of course (that's a given).

Writing style:
I haven't come across writing style like this in a while and hardly ever in YA. The author writes the book in the point of view of an uneducated 18 year old so most of it is written in a phonetic type of style (ex: 33 Snowfish and Pygmalion). I can understand how some readers will very much dislike this especially if they're sticklers of grammar and spelling or have never been exposed to writings where the author writes phonetically throughout the whole book. I love it because you really get to hear Saba and the others talking. If you don't think your'e into that, you might have a tough time, but I implore you to stick to the story, because it's wonderfully fun.

Topics:
Some topics covered in the book include: family relationships, fate, and inner strength (and psychosis possibly...).

Quote:
yer crazy, I said - girl
I was fine till I met you  - guy

Ever heard of the rule of three? he shouts as we run. - guy
No! - girl
If you save somebody's life three times, their life belongs to you. You saved my life today, that makes once. Save it twice more an I'm all yers. - guy

thatisofreakingcute it turns me into squealing fan girl.
