Waiting on Wednesday: Viola in reel Life by Adriana Trigiani

Synopsis

When fourteen-year-old Viola is sent from her beloved Brooklyn to boarding school in Indiana for ninth grade, she overcomes her initial reservations as she makes friends with her roommates, goes on a real date, and uses the unsettling ghost she keeps seeing as the subject of a short film—her first.

This new series sounds cute and reminds me of Friends (tv show). :)

This Is What I Want To Tell You by Heather Duffy Stone

Rating: 4.7/5
Age R: 15+
Release Date: March 1, 2009
Synopsis:
Friendship,
love,
and unexpected secrets

Nadio and his twin sister, Noelle, always had a unique bond. And somehow, Keeley Shipley fit perfectly into their world. But when Keeley spends the summer in England, she comes home changed, haunted by a dark memory. As she and Nadio fall in love, they try to hide it from Noelle, who's jealously guarding a secret of her own. Slowly, a life-long friendship begins to crack under the crushing weight of past trauma, guarded secrets, jealousy, obsession . . . and an unexpected love that could destroy them.
Thoughts:
I LOVE this book! The writing is incredible. I freakin' love it. I especially love how this lovely and sad book was written. Nadio and Noelle are twins and each of them speak in their point of view in alternating chapters (how unique!!). I love how the reader gets to experience their emotions and learn what went on in their lives and their friend, Keeley's life. It's a great experience.
The book made me SO dang sad at times which I enjoyed. It was a tad predictable (not in a crappy infuriating way) but of course I couldn't help but love it anyway. The way this book is written, the way it makes you feel while you read it, it's all a beautiful journey. :) Normally when I like a book this much, I hate that it's so short but when it was all over, it felt great, just perfect. I AM going to revisit this book again in the future. It deserves more than one read. :D

I am looking forward to more from Heather Duffy Stone. I'm in love with her writing. After you read this book you will not blame me ;) It's crazy that's it's her fist book. I am just beyond awed by that fact.

Sweetness:
Check out Heather Duffy Stone's blog here. :)
Quote/s:
"No, she said. You'll always think about him a little bit."

"The photograph of us, in the way I always remembered: a darkened entryway in the Shipleys' living room, the white border of the doorway framing Keeley and my sister--my sister in an orange dress and Keeley in a green dress, laughing and reaching out to each other. Me in the background, the same color as the carpet, watching them."

"Why don't people ever see the way other kinds of love can wreck you? What about the way being left out of love can wreck you?"

"I think we mess up somewhere between high school and career and get terrified and become another person, and then another person again."

That last quote is one of my absolute favorite quotes from this book. :)

Here are this weeks picks:

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

Owen Meany, the only child of a New Hampshire granite quarrier, believes he is God's instrument; he is.
This is John Irving's most comic novel, yet Owen Meany is Mr. Irving's most heartbreaking character.
"Roomy, intelligent, exhilarating and darkly comic...Dickensian in scope....Quite stunning and very ambitious."
LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK REVIEW
"John Irving is an abundantly and even joyfully talented storyteller."
THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOKR EVIEW

I read John Irving's The Cider House Rules two years ago, it's still one of my absolute favorite books. This one sounds just as great. :)

Echo by Francesca Lia Block
Acclaimed author Francesca Lia Block weaves pure magic into this deftly constructed tale—a novel told in the form of linked stories. Echo is caught at the crossroads of a physical world full of hope and despair and the realm of the supernatural, where young men have wings and skeletons speak. On the way, she is graced by angels and gairies and haunted by ghosts, psychopomps, and vampires. But as Echo falls under the spell of demons who threaten to destroy her, she must finally look within to find the strength to survive.

Read some great things about this one. I have quite a number of Block's books but have yet to read them. I'm VERY interested in this one. :)

The Ultimate Rush by Joe Quirk
As the sole rollerblading courier at a San Francisco delivery service, Chet Griffin is the fastest messenger in town. Every day, he delivers critically confidential packages, but when he hands over an already-opened envelope containing a floppy disk with billion-dollar information, a deadly serious customer demands satisfaction. On a routine run, one of Chet's co-workers gets murdered, the finger's pointed at Chet, and he finds himself on a rush job to save his own life. Driven by family ghosts and a little-guy rage against the big-guy machine, Chet enlists the help of his skateboarder-chick best buddy and his superhacker roommate, and takes off across the city to track down the evidence he needs to clear his name - and put away the bad boys who want him dead.

Sounds quite interesting.

Suck It Up by Brian Meehl
“A refreshing take on the vampire romance.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred

Are you up to your neck in bloodsucking vampire stories?

Tired of those tales about dentally enhanced dark lords?

Before I wrote this book I thought all vampires were night-stalking, fangpopping, bloodsucking fiends. Then I met Morning McCobb. He’s a vegan vampire who drinks a soy-blood substitute called Blood Lite. He believes staking should be a hate crime. And someday he hopes to march in a Vampire Pride Parade. He was also the first vampire to out himself and try to show people of mortality, like you and me, that vampires are just another minority with special needs. Trust me—this is like no other vampire book you’ll ever feed on.

So, as my buddy Morning says, “Pop the lid, and suck it up.”

“Appealing characters and an original vampire world. Delightful for those who like their romance vaguely paranormal, their adventure romantic and their vampires defanged.”—Kirkus Reviews

“A flawed and affable protagonist . . . snarky humor, outsider-looking-in perspective, and fresh new takes on the familiar.”—School Library Journal

Nifty.

Headlong by Kathe Koja

And not every girl is the right girl for Vaughn. You can often tell, early on, who these girls are. The Vaughn School. Home of domed ceilings, gleaming checkerboard floors, and the Vaughn Virgins: the upper stratum of girls who have perfect grades, perfect lives, and perfect friends. Lily Noble is a lifer – she knows all the rules. Then sophomore year, Hazel Tobias arrives as a scholarship student, with her model’s looks and unconventional family, and shows Lily everything she’s been missing. Can you ever fit in someplace you don’t want to be? As Lily befriends Hazel, both girls discover what it means to dive deep beneath the surface – of friendship, of commitment – and to live life with all their hearts, with all they are, headlong.

Read this one already but I liked it so much because of the feeling it gives after reading it. The writing was just...something. Read my review here.

Ruined: A Ghost Story by Paula Morris

Rating: 3.5/5
Age R: 13+--because of dead people and a bit of violence
Release Date: August 1, 2009
Synopsis:
Rebecca couldn't feel more out of place in New Orleans, where she comes to spend the year while her dad is traveling. She's staying in a creepy old house with her aunt. And at the snooty prep school, the filthy-rich girls treat Rebecca like she's invisible. Only gorgeous, unavailable Anton Grey seems to give Rebecca the time of day, but she wonders if he's got a hidden agenda. Then one night, in Lafayette Cemetery, Rebecca makes a friend. Sweet, mysterious Lisette is eager to talk to Rebecca, and to show her the nooks and crannies of the city. There's just one catch: Lisette is a ghost. A ghost with a deep, dark secret, and a serious score to settle. As Rebecca learns more from her ghost friend -- and as she slowly learns to trust Anton Grey -- she also uncovers startling truths about her own history. Will Rebecca be able to right the wrongs of the past, or has everything been ruined beyond repair?

Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading this book and thought it was okay. I didn't love it because it was slow a lot of times. The story was interesting but at times there were details that I just did not care about. I wanted to know more about the ghost story and such not all these boring pages about how Rebecca misses New York and yata yata. I get it, she misses it and she's having a hard time in New Orleans but I don't need this repeated too often. There were other details that kind of irked me. I can't remember exactly what. I just remember thinking "get back to the ghost story!" Maybe that's just me being a dork though. I did really like the ghost story and the ghost Lisette who's name is my name! :) It's spelled just like my name too hehe Anywho, I also liked the whole voo doo deal which I won't say more about for fear of spoiling it.
There's a little sprinkle of a love story in there which is nice. The story has more to do with Lisette and Rebecca. The story will surprise you with its twists and turns which I have to say, I LOVED!
Another thing about this story I adored was the bit where Lisette and Rebecca are taking a walk together and they see all these ghosts. It's soo cool! It's very detailed so you can pictured it pretty clearly which is just awesome! They talk about certain ghosts and how they ended up that way. I wish there was more talk of other ghosts though :(
I liked reading about New Orleans and some customs they have there. It was really cool. I also liked reading a bit about Katrina. It is true what it says in the book about how a lot of folks from New Orleans came here to Houston. I remember some people being really pissed off about it. Gosh that annoyed me, why get mad over stuff?
The slow parts of the book were pretty much in the first half of the book. The other half is much, much better, more exciting, and fast paced.
If it sounds like your kind of story then by all means, pick it up. If you're iffy about it just check it out at your library and test it out. If you like it then buy it! :)

Quote/s:

Sorry I haven't been around on the blog much folks. I had orientation for my college this whole week :( I'm so freakin' tired. Tomorrow's the first day and I'm soo scared! Well not scared but nervous. I have this one teacher who's got quite the scary reputation. I'm scared of her I must say.

Anywho thanks to Kristi and Alea for IMM.

Here's what I got this past week:

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls. Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift. Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers. Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

A vampire in the Night World, James can make Poppy immortal. But first they both must risk everything to go against the laws of Night World.

Fugitives from Night World, three vampire sisters leave their isolated home to live among humans in Daughters of Darkness. Their brother, Ash, is sent to bring the girls back, but he falls in love with their beautiful friend.

Two witch cousins fight over their high school crush. It's a battle between black magic and white magic in Spellbinder.

Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters — they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. And falling in love breaks all the laws of the Night World.

In Dark Angel, Gillian is saved from drowning by her guardian angel. Only visible to Gillian, Angel will fulfill her heart's every desire. But when Angel starts making strange and sinister requests, Gillian must question who he truly is and where he came from.

Armed with a wooden stake, martial arts, and the will to resist a vampire's mind control, Rashel struggles to avenge her mother's death in The Chosen. Then she meets Quinn, her soulmate, who is part of the world she has vowed to destroy.

Hannah receives notes warning her of incredible danger in Soulmate. But if death is her destiny, is the Lord of the Night World's love strong enough to save her?Small-town girl turned Big Apple beauty, Casey McCloy is really beginning to enjoy the high life in her high-rise. She's climbing the social ladder, to the dismay of her neighbor and rival, Madison Macallister. And Casey could end up as popular as Madison now that the two are set to star in their own reality show, "De-Luxe." But reality TV can be so unreal . . . Madison loves the attention, but having every bit of her life caught on tape is often less than glamorous. Yet fame comes at a price-and she's willing to pay. Meanwhile, now that Casey and her almost-boyfriend Drew Van Allen are currently more off than on, she's beginning to wonder if everything in her life is just an illusion-and how much longer the illusion can last.
Ever since his mother left, life has't been easy for Heath Wellington III. Between his father's (Junior's) bouts with alcoholism and literary rejection, and Heath's own wrongful suspension from school, there hasn't been all that much to be thankful for.

But following the tragic death of estranged grandfather Senior, father and son alike stand to inherit a life-changing fortune . . . with one catch.

Heath and Junior must spend the next three months managing Senior's bed and breakfast, located in the same Massachusetts home Junior has spent the last eight years trying to escape.

Upended from his everyday life and relocated to a town where everyone knew and loved the grandfather he can't even remember, Heath finds an inn full of some of the strangest people he's ever met, such as:

* Winsted, the old, wise Jamaican man who used to lead the prayers in Senior s factory;

* Mrs. Farrel, an elderly woman giving away her late husband's fortune letter by letter;

* Mustang Sally, the muscle-bound, tattooed grease monkey who doubles as a children's author;

* And Carter, the silent TV news junkie and secret Harvard graduate.

And, at a nearby school is Savannah, Junior's first love, and her adorable, autistic daughter, Tori.

But most of all, there's Junior himself, vinegar to Heath's oil. As Heath adjusts to his new world, what he needs most is to start anew with his father, to understand that Junior, too, is dealing with loss, and to realize that, even in the most tragic of times, there's a lot in life to be thankful for.

Thanksgiving at the Inn is a beautiful story of family and forgiveness, and a sure holiday classic. Tim Whitney's fantastic, heartwarming debut is one you'll want to read with the whole family for years and years to come.
In the class of the high school English teacher she has been haunting, Helen feels them: for the first time in 130 years, human eyes are looking at her. They belong to a boy, a boy who has not seemed remarkable until now. And Helen—terrified, but intrigued—is drawn to him. The fact that he is in a body and she is not presents this unlikely couple with their first challenge. But as the lovers struggle to find a way to be together, they begin to discover the secrets of their former lives and of the young people they come to possess.

I also got a 2009 calendar I won. It has the "real men of reality tv" on it. They're ..wow. I don't watch reality tv like at all but they're hot okay? :) I have watched reality tv before of course though and I recognize some of them.

Read any of those books? What'd you think? What did you get this week?

Gunslinger Girl is a freaking amazing anime that is heartbreaking, beautiful, and violent. :) Crazy combination huh?

Right now, I'd like to recommend the soundtrack. It's one of my all time favorite soundtracks, right alongside the Pan's Labyrinth Soundtrack. :)

The soundtrack consists of 39 songs/themes:

My absolute favorite is Ansia, which happens to be my second favorite song of all time:

The actual soundtrack cover looks something like this:

This soundtrack is just pure awesomeness. I highly recommend it. Thing is you might have a hard time finding it because it's from Japan and has not been released here. You can get it on Amazon.com if you're willing to pay almost 70 bucks. I sure am not. Unless you can find it cheaper elsewhere you will have to satisfy your curiosity by listening to it on youtube though this link. Just click on the side videos, all the songs are there. :)

Enjoy! :) If you listen to it, let me know what you think!

Author Interview with Lauren Baratz-Logsted author of the upcoming Crazy Beautiful

Hey all, please welcome the author of the upcoming book Crazy Beautiful, Lauren Baratz-Logsted! :D

Where did you come up with the idea for Crazy Beautiful? What inspired you? Was some of the story based on your real life experiences?

I was in New York City two years ago, doing a round of editor visits, and I found time to take in "Beauty & the Beast" on Broadway. I started thinking about why that's the one Disneyfied fairy tale that has translated so well to stage and screen, and how it's really the only one where the male lead is more than just a Ken doll, designed to make the girl look good. In fact, the Beast is the more compelling character of the story because he's so complex. Before I knew it, I was dreaming up my own contemporary version, featuring a boy with hooks for hands and a gorgeous girl who meet on their first day at a new school. I have known a few people in my life with hooks for hands, but other than the pool-shooting in the book - I love to shoot pool - none of it is based on real life.

Why did you choose to write about a guy with hooks for hands (that's so cool!)?
I wanted to explore what it'd be like to be a guy at an age when guys are really thinking about having physical contact with romantic partners and how even the simplest things - like feeling another person's hand in yours - would be frustratingly out of reach. I also wanted Lucius' difference from others to be visually apparent, making the other kids in his new school outside of Aurora regard him as something of a beast, even though we readers know it's wrong to view him so. Oh, and I'm glad you think it's cool. I think Lucius is very cool - one of the coolest characters I've created - although in his past he's definitely done some things that are uncool.

---Whoa! I did not expect you to say that at all! I love the idea and can't wait to read the book and to learn what uncool things Lucious has done, I'm VERY curious!

When did you first know you wanted to be a writer? Are you happy with your career? If you could be anything in the world (career-wise) what would you be and why?
I was 12 when an English teacher first gave me the idea that I could write but it wasn't until 20 years later that I walked out on my day job to take a chance on my dream career. I've never been sorry. I love writing and I particularly love that in my career I've had books published for nearly every age group imaginable, from books for young readers aged 6-10 to books for adults. In terms of that "anything in the world (career-wise)" question, I'm assuming you mean other than a writer? Well, I love doing a lot of things that surround writing - agenting, editing, reviewing - and have even dabbled in most of them. But if I had to go totally outside this field, I'd say politics. Lauren Baratz-Logsted, Mayor of Danbury - how does that sound?

Haha yeah I assumed other than a writer :D Lauren Baratz-Logstead, Mayor of Danbury sounds awesome! hahaha

What's your biggest fear?
Not living long enough to take care of my nine-year-old daughter until she grows up. (Don't worry, I'm not dying, or at least not anymore than anyone else is, but that is my biggest fear.)

Awww cute

Can you tell us a little secret? I wouldn't suggest confessing to a murder here you never know who's watching/reading :D
I love being female but there are times I wish I could be a male for a day. Oh, I don't mean I want to be a cross-dresser - not that there's anything wrong with that! - but I do think males experience the world differently than we do, and I am curious. I guess that's why it's such a blast channeling characters like Lucius - for the period of time I'm writing the character, I get to live an existance wholly different from my own.

Oooh nice one. I had never thought about it that way before.

What constantly makes you smile?
Easy: my daughter, Jackie.

Know a good joke? :)
Not right now, I don't! And may I say, it is totally unfair to spring something like that on someone! Oh, wait a second, here's one that's big with third-graders: Why did Tigger flush the toilet? (Wait for it now!) Because he saw Pooh.

Hahaha I'm not in third grade anymore but that made me smile. : )

Do you read much? What's the last thing you read? What's your favorite book?
I read almost constantly when I'm not writing or doing stuff with friends and family. We're talking a few hundred books a year here. The last thing I read was Stephenie Meyer's Eclipse. In writing circles, there's constant debate - "Is she any good?" "Are these books bad for girls?" - so I wanted to form my own opinion straight through. As for my favorite book, among live authors it's Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera; among dead ones it's F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.

Awww I loved The Great Gatsby!

Are you also a TV addict? What are some of your favorite TV shows?
I do love TV! I know lots of "lit types" find it fashionable to disdain it, but not me. Here are some of my loves: General Hospital, all the political shows on MSNBC, One Tree Hill, Smallville, 30 Rock, American Idol, Mad Men, Dexter, Gilmore Girls, House, Friday Night Lights, Nip/Tuck, Weeds, Entourage, Rescue Me. Really, I could go on and on. Oops, looks like I just did.
Thank you so much for having me.

--Woo hoo! Another T.V addict! I also watch Dexter, Smallville (Superman's my favorite superhero and it doesn't hurt that Tom Welling plays the part), House, and Weeds.

Thank you for letting me interview you it was fun! :D

Nominated for the BBAW awards :)

Gosh I am sooo happy to have been nominated!! Thanks to whomever/whoever nominated me!! :D Even if I don't win, I'm still really happy to have been nominated. This just makes me so happy so thanks thanks thanks a bunch. :)

Ok So I still haven't said what I was nominated for. I was nominated for "Most Eclectic Taste" eeek!! hehehe I'm so happy ok ok I'll stop now hehe
Most Eclectic Taste in case you're wondering means:

This blog stands out because of its uniqueness-you never know what you're going to get, but it's always something surprising and new.

Gosh I guess that is kinda true hehehe well the "you never know what you're going to get" bit haha I think the main reason why my blog's this way is because in person, I'm VERY random and I love all kinds of stuff. I don't like anything to bore me because it kills me slowly so I like to have different things on my blog not just ONE thing. Not only book reviews but music, movies, news, book awesomeness and just plain random things every now and then. Hopefully my blog is not boring and it's a bit like me at least. I want it to entertain, to inform, to recommend (books, movies, music and such), to amaze, and to be neat-O.

Thanks SO much. Not just to whomever/whoever nominated me but also to regular readers, passerbys, commenters, bloggers, everyone! :)

I have to choose 5 posts and I've no idea which to choose. If anyone has a favorite let me know in the comments or email me. :) Thank you!

Dream Thursday: Flying and being attacked by old men

Last week I had this really crazy dream (so what's new?):

I was flying around this weird world and at some point these evil old men were trying to catch me with the help of these huge, tall machines. I ended up escaping but still, CRAZY! It wasn't really scary for me but it was pretty strange.

I only remembered bits and pieces, sorry. I think the "world" was kind of post apocalyptic because I remember fire and landfills and emptiness. It was War of the Worlds-ish.

So what crazy/interesting/awesome dreams have you had lately?

Waiting on Wednesday: Falling by Sharon Dogar

Synopsis

Neesha is haunted by violent visions of the past; of another Southeast Asian girl, far away and forever ago. Just when the echoes in her head threaten to overwhelm her, to rob her of her fragile sanity, rescue comes in the form of Sam--a white boy she's known since childhood.

Neesha finds herself falling--falling in love.

Can Sam catch her? Can the two of them find a way to live their own story? Or are they fated to replay the tragedy of a centuries-old love affair?

Sounds neato! :)

Dandy Books

Dandy Books is a meme I started doing a while back where I will post books that I think sound dandy which you might think sound dandy and want to check out. :) Most of these I've had on my tbr list for ages so I though I'd share. These books I do not own but wish I did so I'm probably getting them in the future. I'm making this meme a weekly one every Tuesday, so look out for it ;)

Here are this week's picks:

Vacation by Jeremy C. Shipp
It's time for blueblood Bernard Johnson to leave his boring life behind and go on The Vacation, a yearlong corporate-sponsored odyssey. But instead of seeing the world, Bernard is captured by terrorists, becomes a key figure in secret drug wars, and, worse, doesn't once miss his secure American Dream.

Sounds insane. I like insane. :)

When I Was Five I Killed Myself by Howard Buten

Burton Rembrandt has the sort of perspective on life that is almost impossible for adults to understand: the perspective of an 8-year-old. And to Burt, his parents and teachers seem to be speaking a language he cannot understand. This is Burt's story as written in pencil on the walls of Quiet Room in the Children's Trust Residence Center, where he lands after expressing his ardent feelings for a classmate. It begins:

When I was five I killed myself....

In this rediscovered modern classic from "one of France's best-loved temporary writers" (Time), Howard Buten renders with astounding insight and wry language the tale of a troubled -- or perhaps just perfectly normal -- young boy testing the boundaries of love and life.

Been on my tbr list forever. Sounds incredible.

One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies by Sonya Sones

My name is Ruby.

This book is about me.

It tells the deeply hideous story

of what happens when my mother dies

and I'm dragged three thousand miles away

from my gorgeous boyfriend, Ray,

to live in L.A. with my father,

who I've never even met

because he's such a scumbag that he

divorced my mom before I was born.

The only way I've ever even seen him

is in the movies,

since he's this megafamous actor

who's been way too busy

trying to win Oscars

to even visit me once in fifteen years.

Everyone loves my father.

Everyone but me.

Luna by Julie Anne Peters
Regan's brother Liam can't stand the person he is during the day. Like the moon from whom Liam has chosen his female namesake, his true self, Luna, only reveals herself at night. In the secrecy of his basement bedroom Liam transforms himself into the beautiful girl he longs to be, with help from his sister's clothes and makeup. Now, everything is about to change-Luna is preparing to emerge from her cocoon. But are Liam's family and friends ready to welcome Luna into their lives? Compelling and provocative, this is an unforgettable novel about a transgender teen's struggle for self-identity and acceptance.

This book sounds pretty neato.

Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You by Peter Cameron

In Peter Cameron's eighth work of fiction, the narrator is a disaffected teenage product of divorced, self-involved, and privileged parents. He is thus so emblematic of a typical upper-middle-class experience today that there is from the outset the potential for cliché, suggesting that Cameron has set himself an admirably difficult task. James Sveck, a Manhattanite, smacks of an updated Holden Caulfield, believing as he does that nearly everyone is a fraud, apart from a young man who runs his mother's art gallery and, touchingly, his grandmother. But Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You -- a work unfairly categorized as "young adult" -- is a keenly observed and elegantly drawn novel that skirts the problems typical of the post-Salinger teenage angst story.

I've seen this one being compared to The Catcher in the Rye and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, both of which I LOVE. Need. To. Read. It.

Yes I renamed this meme, the last title sounded silly and I knew it but I was especially uncreative that day apparently. ;)

Again, I ask, have you read any of these? If so, tell us what you think! If not, are you interested? Thoughts? Comments?

In My Mailbox

Thanks to Kristi and Alea for IMM :)

This is what I got this past week:

Time is a funny thing in the hospital. In the mental ward. You lose track of it easily.

After six months in the Maryland Mental Health Unit, Kyra Sellers, a.k.a. Goth Girl, is going home.

Unfortunately, she’s about to find out that while she was away, she lost track of more than time.

Kyra is back in black, feeling good, and ready to make up with the only person who’s ever appreciated her for who she really is.

But then she sees him. Fanboy. Transcended from everything he was into someone she barely recognizes.

And the anger and memories come rushing back.

There’s so much to do to people when you’re angry.

Kyra’s about to get very busy.

This is the sequel to The Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl which I bought not too long ago but have yet to read. I better get to it. I'm SO curious about both :)

Meet Peter Brown, a young Manhattan emergency room doctor with an unusual past that is just about to catch up with him. His morning begins with the quick disarming of a would-be mugger, followed by a steamy elevator encounter with a sexy young pharmaceutical rep, topped off by a visit with a new patient - and from there Peter's day is going to get a whole lot worse and a whole lot weirder. Because that patient knows Peter from his other life, when he had a different name and a very different job. The only reason he's a doctor now is thanks to the Witness Protection Program-and even they can't protect him from the long reach of the New Jersey mob. Now he's got to do whatever it takes to keep his patient alive so he can buy some time...and beat the reaper.

BEAT THE REAPER is not just the only novel that will be compared to Quentin Tarantino's films, Grey's Anatomy, and Chuck Palahniuk-it's also the most original and entertaining debut thriller you'll read this year.

I won this book over at At Home With Books, thanks again! :) I am SO curious about this one because I'm a HUGE fan of QT and CP. :) I love the music from GA but have never seen the show... haha :)

I also got The Hate List for a T2T tour :)

Non-Books:

If you haven't seen this movie. Shame. On. You. And if you haven't listened to the soundtrack. Don't speak to me. But I'll forgive you if you pretend you have done both, only if you watch it/hear it though :D I got this wonderful movie through swaptree because I didn't own it and my sister STILL hasn't seen it. I need her mind to be blown away by it's awesomeness so yeppers. ;)

Pictured are these cute earrings I bought for $0.16 cents! Unfortunately they are too freakin' heavy, they're gonna kill my ears. So I'll just use them for something crafty. Don't know what yet. Maybe a bracelet or necklace. The rest are these adorable hair clips from celesteandcompany.etsy.com. I won them from 10 One World for my younger cousins who I'll see Sunday to give to :) You should check out both sites. On the etsy site there will soon be some Halloween hair clips btw :)

I also go a present I ordered for a cousin of mine. I won't say what because she reads my blog ;)

The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had by Kristin Levine

Rating: 4.3/5
Age R: 9+ --Nothing inappropriate. Except for a bit of violence and racism so if you're not okay with reading that or having your children read it then don't.
Release Date: January 22, 2009
Synopsis:
The last thing Harry "Dit" Sims expects when Emma Walker comes to town is to become friends. Proper -talking, brainy Emma doesn't play baseball or fi sh too well, but she sure makes Dit think, especially about the differences between black and white. But soon Dit is thinking about a whole lot more when the town barber, who is black, is put on trial for a terrible crime. Together Dit and Emma come up with a daring plan to save him from the unthinkable.

Set in 1917 and inspired by the author's true family history, this is the poignant story of a remarkable friendship and the perils of small-town justice

Thoughts:
I wish the cover where different because then it would appeal to more people. :( Anyways, this book is GOOD, great, awesome! It leaves you with this happy feeling that you won't be able to shake off for a while. I loved that the most about this reading experience.
The book is basically about friendship and how you shouldn't let the fact that someone is different from you in some way (race, age, religion, etc.) affect who you become friends with. It should not matter to you that your supposed friends don't like someone you want to be friends with. Be friends with whomever you want, no matter the differences. Friendship is a powerful thing and everyone can do great with it in their lives. Be happy people, be happy! Don't get all grrr about stupid things like race. Only because someone's skin color is different from yours means NOTHING! Gosh, you readers, and I all know racism still exists now in 2009. That's a long time from 1917 isn't it? That's just sad.
Back to the book. Pick it up, it's really cute and awesome and makes your heart fuller as you read it. I adored reading about Harry (everyone calls him Dit) and his ginormous family and how he becomes friends with a bookworm, Emma. Yes ladies and gents, a bookworm is in this book. I hardly read any books with bookworms in them. That's just sad, man.
There's quite a bit of problems that Harry has to deal with because he's white and Emma is black. Not only that but he and his large family do not have a lot of money and he's trying to save up two dollars in order to save up for the biggest hunt next year.
Emma and Dit deal with quite a bit of tough (and sad and scary) situations. But maybe together they can deal with it. :) There's also a bit of adventure, history, change of hearts, and plenty of humor (oh gosh it was so hilarious at times!) sprinkled around which is just as awesome. Although there was this one part of the book that I just wanted to cry! It was intense.

Note:
One of my favorite characters was Jim Dang-It. Gosh he's so freakin' awesome! Kind of reminds me of Leo from That 70's Show. No he's not always or ever high. He's just ...I don't know there's something about him. I guess just because he's awesome in that interesting way. :)
I think it's just dandy that the book was inspired by the author's family history. That is just so cool!

Quote/s:
"Me and Chip always shared a desk at school. Chip was handsome and popular, with golden brown hair and eyes as green as emeralds. (Least that was the way my sisters described him. Tell me, which one of them had ever seen an emerald? But I guess green eyes as green as pond scum just don't sound as nice.)"

"..we both slid off our chairs and put our ears to the door.
Now, I don't try to listen to other people's converstaions. I know it ain't polite. But sometimes what they are saying is so dang interesting, it's not my fault if I accidentally on purpose listen in."

Waiting on Wednesday: Diary of a Witness by Catherine Ryan Hyde

Synopsis

One day, something’s going to snap. . . .

Ernie doesn't have a lot of friends at school. Just Will. They have stuff in common—like fishing. But more important, they have common enemies: the school jocks, who seem to find bullying just another sport.

For the most part, Ernie and Will take life at high school in stride. Until Will has one very bad day. Now nothing is remotely funny. Ernie finds himself a witness—to loss, to humiliation, and to Will’s anger—an anger that’s building each and every moment.

Ernie doesn’t want to believe his best friend is changing, but he can’t deny the truth. Soon he has a choice: join or die. Or can he find another way?

Gosh this book sounds amazing/sad/suspenseful! Very interested in reading this one :)

Bags/Purses

I don't have a lot of bags/purses :( I LOVE them but I sadly just don't have that many. These are the only ones I do have:

Pretty lame huh? If you notice, they're all messenger bags. I am a very, very forgetful person so these are really dandy compared to regular purses. Yeah I'm a dork. :)

Check out this site it's really neato! http://summerdarling13.blogspot.com :)

This bag I wish I owned, it's simple but pretty cute :)

I'm totally trying to win this:

If you want to try your luck click on the images for the link. :) But try not to decrease my chances ;) hehe

Being random--Cable

Yeah I don't and it sucks. :( I forgot what mine is called but it's not awesome. Times have changed so it's not super sucky because I can watch TV shows and such online whenever. Legally and all. :) Or not :) Not illegal for me anyway. Anyways, I think it's dandy. :) I still don't like that when I'm bored and have nothing to do I can't turn on my TV to watch something awesome. Now that sucks. Sometimes there's something on that's interesting but most of the time it's all reruns of stuff that came out like an hour before. It's annoying. I remember when I was like ten or younger and we had Direct TV. It was awesome. I watched Spirited Away when it came out like ten or more times. Lovely, lovely movie. If you haven't seen it you BETTER watch it. Like right now. Stop reading this post and GO. Now! If you don't I'll throw a cherry at your face. hehe :)
It was like Satellite Directv or whatever and that we had that ginormous satellite on our house for a long time. I kind of miss just the satellite because it was very pretty. I saw other people's and theirs were plain and simple hehe ours kind of stood out. It was black and spider web-y looking. Do people even have DirectTV anymore? It sounds kind of old. They should advertise more on TV because all I see lately are other companies.

Why I Fight by J. Adams Oaks

Rating: 4.2/5
Age R: 13+
Release Date: April 21, 2009
Synopsis:
Wyatt Reaves
takes the seat next to you, bloodied and soaking wet, and he is a big-fisted beast. Tell him to stretch out like an X across asphalt and you've got a parking space. But Wyatt's been taking it lying down for too long, and he is NOT happy.

Since he turned twelve and a half, he's been living with his uncle, a traveling salesman of mysterious agenda and questionable intent. Soon, Uncle Spade sees the potential in "kiddo" to earn cash. And that's enough to keep the boy around for nearly six years.

But what life does Wyatt deserve? Alcohol? Drugs? Bare-fisted fights? Tattoos? No friends? No role models? Living in a car? If you're brave enough to stay and listen, you'll hear an astounding story. It's not a pretty road Wyatt has traveled, but growing up rarely is.

Thoughts:
The first thing you should know about this book before reading it is that you WILL fall in love with Wyatt's voice. Don't say I didn't warn you. :)
The reason why I didn't full on really love this book was because it was slow at times and the story didn't really go anywhere. The reader learns all about Wyatt and how he's finding himself but at the same time the story is just lacking somehow. I would have loved to learn more about how Wyatt feels about the fights, more details and less talk about traveling from place to place. That was honestly boring. I wanted Wyatt to tell me more about his life. Or maybe if the book were longer I would have liked it more. Yes, I think that would have made a huge difference but only if I got more information about Wyatt and his troubles.
It's a coming of age story about a 12 year old boy (by the end of the book he's 16) and his strange/violent/sad life. Like I said before, I wish there were to the story, but I don't regret having read this book even if I had to take a break now and then, it was definitely worth the ride.
I loved Wyatt's voice and how he's actually speaking to you. It made me feel like that nurse sitting beside Forest Gump at the bus stop while he was telling his wonderful story. :)
For the few flaws this book has it is for sure worth reading more than once. If it's not your kind of book you should still pick it up just because the writing is so lovely. :)

Note:
Even though this book is about fighting, not much of it happens, that we are told about anyway, and it's not written with icky gory details so don't be scared to pick it up.

Neato:
The writing :)
I liked how the dialogue does not have all the regular punctuation marks. It's pretty nifty. At first it took some getting used to but I quickly ended up loving it.

Not-so neato:
The only thing I didn't like was how it was slow at times.

Quote/s:
"I remember one day real good. It was one of those perfect afternoons when the heat and the sun warm your skin just right. One of those times you think about later when you need something to reminds you how life can be. It was quite and slow. The sky looked like a lake, and if you listened carefully ..."

-I can't stop smiling, I said up to the sky.
-Why?
-I don't know...Sometimes you forget how good a smile can feel...
-But sometimes it's work to keep smiling, she said.....

Song: One More Day by Vast

Gosh! Vast is amazing!! I love you Vast!!!! :)

Lyrics:

Have you heard..?
Have you tried to understand..?
It's all right..
It gets easier with time,
How are you?
Are you ever coming back?
I have changed..
And I've realized I was wrong,

I was wrong..
Now I'll never see your face anymore,
Oh my love..
I'd give anything for one more day..
..With you..

I'm getting through,
Wish you felt the way I do
I have changed, and I've realized I was wrong

I was wrong..
Now I'll never see your face.. Anymore,
Oh my love
I'd give anything for one more day..
..With you..

I was wrong, I was wrong,
Now I'll never see your face.. Anymore,
Oh my love
I'd do anything, for one more day..
..With you..

I'd do anything for one more day..
I'd give anything for one more day..

..With you.

In My Mailbox

Thanks to Kristi and Alea for IMM. :)

This is what I got last week:

I won this one and gosh darn it's so cute but does not fit me or my sister that well. I think I'll give it away or sell it (I need book money bad!). I don't want to say "um can I switch it for another size" because usually there's a problem or I'm told no. So yeah, don't want to go through that again.

I got this one for one of my friends who is a little obsessed with the whole Dahlia murder.
Won this. It sounds SO good! I haven't read many memoirs, but I do love them. Can't wait to get a chance to read this one :)
$2 bucks, it's been on my tbr list for years. Of course I had to get it.
I know, I know this is the third one. Well I got it at Half Price Book store and I used a coupon so it was less than $5 bucks. I'll buy the first and second with a Best Buy gift card I have :) But not yet because I still haven't decided what to get with the rest of the GC money. I just CAN'T decide!! I wan't to get books that are SUPER awesome and definitely re-readable. I want those books to be worth it. Any suggestions? yes I made those letters ginormous so you could see them better hehe ;) Thank you lots!

Other than answering that question for me, read any of those books? What'd you think of them?

*Yeah I've read the whole HP series and loved it, had to replace some and bc I won those it was awesome

Oh on Friday I also got a box in the mail. Guess what was in it? It'd take a picture but my memory stick is full and I don't feel like it hehe sorry. Well, my cousin from California sent me a box full of awesome T-shirts and some candy called "Dulce Lizeth" which means "Lizeth Candy." My name's Lisette but that's close enough and still super cool. She found it and bought it for me hehe I can't taste them though :( Not yet. I got two of my wisdom teeth pulled out (the other two on another day b/c I had to change the date yatayata) and I can't eat sweets for a while. :'( I wanna taste MY candy!

Saturday:
I got the Jane Austen Handbook which I won over at Everything Victorian. That site is so lovely! :) Check it out!
I also got Harry Potter book 7 and a cute HP pin!! I won this over at Shooting Stars Mag, thanks!
