The Guardian by Joyce Sweeney

Rating: 4.3/5
Age R: 12+
Release Date: March 31, 2009
Thoughts:
Hunter is a 13 year old living with his abusive foster mother and three sisters. Things were going pretty well for him until his foster father dies. His foster mother becomes INCREASINGLY more abusive towards him, the bully at school raises the weekly fee, and because he can't stand it anymore he prays to that guardian angel he saw when he was four. But did he really see him? Is he imagining things or is his guardian angel really solving his problems? But do guardian angels seriously email people and scare a girl half to death? Hmm...curiouser and curiouser don't you think?
I really liked this book! I would say it's a quick, light read, but even thought it's 177 pgs long, there is nothing light about it. It can get intense, unpredictable, crazy, and even pull at your heart strings at times.
Many of the things that happened I just could never have predicted! It was just so surprising and sad!!! I really, really REALLY wanted things to end differently for him, but oh well. You will feel so sad for Hunter and by the time you've read the first ten pages, you'll be cheering for him and wanting him to just be happy. Trust me, it may start out slow but it gets intense then you just don't want to stop reading until you're finished and you find out what will happen with Hunter.
I highly recommend this book so go out and get it now!

Enjoy. :)

From inside the book:
The distant growl of a motorcycle engine wakes me up and I wonder if I'm going crazy. That's something I actually worry about a lot. Dr. Phil did this whole show on what kind of kids are prone to turn out bad and it was my biography.

..but when she says this, it's as if she reached into my chest and grabbed my heart.

Dreamer by Uh Huh Her

I LOVE this song a little too much haha :D

Enjoy this awesomeness!!!!

Lyrics:
You've seen the worst of me now
I'm all alone see
You lost me somehow
And what we're
fighting for is peace
Are you still in love with me,
Or someone else?

Well are you such a dreamer?
Put yourself in my shoes
Careful what you wish for love
(oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh)

I've seen the worst of you too
I let it go see
Because I have to
And when I'm falling on my knees
You'll take my hand in yours
What will be, we'll be

Cause are you such a dreamer?
Put yourself in my shoes
Careful what you wish for love

What's the matter with our ways
I'm missing something,
not to blame
But don't you worry,
this will pass
It's only cause my mind's
been spinning
No control,
I've lost my head
All of this is just beginning
Not enough,
it's never enough
I'll only want to keep on dreaming

Cause are you such a dreamer?
Put yourself in my shoes
Careful what you wish for love (oooh)

Cause are you such a dreamer?
Put yourself in my shoes
Careful what you wish for love
(oooh, oooh, oooh,
oooh, oooh, oooh)

Isn't this song awesome yet sad?

LOOOOVE it!

City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

Rating: 4.5/5
Age R: 14+
Thoughts:
In the third and final book of The Mortal Instruments series , Clary and Jace still have their problems going on, Valentine is still the big bad and now of course there are more problems added to the mix. How are the Shadowhunters going to stop Valentine? And what's this about all these lies going around?
I loved this final book to the series. It was a great wrap up to the story. The first two were kinda bleh but this one...wow!
I was still not a fan of Cassandra Clare writing similes in practically every other sentence but overall this action packed, you-thought-that-was-the-truth-yeah-well-you're-wrong thing going on...LOVED it! You don't want to miss the ending to this series.

Here's some awesome passages, don't worry spoiler-free:

Because you weren't in love with him. That's an iffy proposition, and I think he's handling it with grace. A lot of teenage boys would sulk, or lurk around under your window with a boom box"
'Good,' Simon said. 'If you want to know why, it's because you smell like blood.'
'It's my cologne. Eau de Recent Injury.' Jace raised his left hand. It was a glove of white bandages, stained across the knuckles where blood seeped through.'

'Patience, grasshoper,' said Maia. 'Good things come to those who wait.'
'I always thought that was 'Good things come to those who do the wave,' said Simon. 'No wonder I've been so confused all my life.'
'Confused is a nice word for it," said Jace...

There are battles with skeletons, many truths revealed, moments that will have you going "Awww," and fun fun fun for everyone. So go read it!!!

Highlights:
The ending
The truth about Jace
The Luke thing
The Alec thing (Awwww)

You see no spoilers :) You'll know what I mean once you read it or if you've already read it. :D

A Bridge Between Us by Julie Shigekuni

Rating: 4/5
Age R: 14+
Thoughts:
I loved the writing! No wonder Barnes and Noble has this amazing author listed under Discover Great New Writers. I "discovered" this writer four years ago when I picked up this book from my piles of books, I have no idea how I got it but yeah.
Anywho...
I recommend this book to those who enjoy reading about generation of families. This book is quite similar in its narration style to that of Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club, so if you liked that you'll love this. :)
A Bridge Between us made me so sad at times and amazed at others. I really liked it and am so surprised that this is Julie Shigekuni's first novel, she did an awesome job!

Synopsis

Four generations of Japanese American women make their home in a large house in San Francisco, united by the obligations of family and tradition and, perhaps, by love. In alternating chapters, the four women--Reiko, Rio, Tomoe, and Nomi Hito--speak with unflinching honesty about their lives, the secrets that have separated mother and daughter, and the fierce ties of intimacy that form an inextricable bridge between them. With the touch and power of a master storyteller, Julie Shigekuni gracefully interweaves four distinctive voices to shape a moving story of love and the courage it requires. In baring the heart of one family, she illuminates the truths about families, real and imagined, we all create.

Kissing Song by Dawn Landes

My second favorite song ever!!! It's just beyond awesome.

Lyrics:

The phone's ringing
It's been ringing all morning
And the knocking, it's not starting, it's stopping
And the screaming, in the streets it's like barking
It's nothing, they are kissing

They don't hear anything
They don't notice the lightning
It's striking at the silent fighting
The everything for control of the ceiling
It's winning, and the rain pours down on her

Soak in the carpet, their shoes and the furniture
And he needs her to drown out all the water and noise in his head

Someone's choking, someone's praying so hard
They are listening to the stained glass for answers
They don't come in from the walls
Which are taking a beating from the wind on the outside
And it's beating, all its way to the break
And it's meeting, that will make them love sick
The walls crumbling, they don't feel anything,
They feel nothing but the kissing

Aren't those just beautiful lyrics?!!

Zombie Queen of Newbury High by Amanda Ashby

Rating: 3.5/5
Age R: 13+
Thoughts:
All Mia wants is to do is keep her prom date. Yeah, you know that guy the super popular one? That one. But dang that flirty girl Samantha ( another popular person) seems to be catching his attention. What if he decides to take her to the prom instead of Mia?
That just cannot be, so guess what Mia does? She does what any normal person would do*. She casts a spell on him. Of course it just backfires on her and just turns every senior and teacher in a meeting into ZOMBIES!
*-Being sarcastic here, she does admit this isn't normal though so kudos to her.
Oh and the fun doesn't stop there. It turns out that zombies don't immediately become brain dead people. They go through some stages first before ending up wanting to eat something very interesting. You'll see....
To be fair it was mostly her friend Candice's idea though, so you can't completely blame the girl for casting this spell especially since she didn't believe it would work or that it would turn all these people into zombies.
This is how Mia really meets the mysterious new guy, Chase, who usually keeps to himself. He tells her how because of her, all the seniors and some teachers were infected with a virus called Viral Zombaticus. But how does Chase know all this stuff? Hmm...Curiouser and curiouser.

I thought this book was pretty okay. I really liked how Mia was a Buffy and Angel fan. I also liked how Candace was so funny because she's a hypochondriac (she thinks she's got all kinds of diseases). I wasn't a big fan of the fact that Chase was not very well developed. I mean sure he has this background we get to know about and all but it was just not that believable. Maybe if the story were longer and we got to learn more details it would be better but that's just not the case.
This book was a cute, light read and would recommend checking it out of the library or maybe borrowing it. It was fairly enjoyable and you get some laughs, but it's not for everyone.

Here's a neat passage:
After being told she's a zombie-
Oh, this is bad. So bad. I can't believe how bad this is. Do you know how it feels to have a life-threatening disease? I mean, I could die.

Note: In all of my 18 years I have never heard another teenager say "mind you"

Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

Warning Warning! Non-YA

Rating: 5/5
Age R: 17+ totally Rated-R
Thoughts:
I began reading this book last year when I first heard about True Blood the tv show and found out it was based on this series. After finding out that the show was...NOT for kiddos, I'm eighteen but still I'm not into that stuff, I thought "okay I need to stop reading this book before I'm traumatized" but it turns out the books are not like someone said they were. I read that the books and show where both very mature if you know what I mean but what whoever that person was (I read it in some blog a loooong time ago) said some stuff that was a complete lie! They hugely exaggerated which almost made me not get into this series. Thankfully a trusted friend of mine who read the first two books already, told me that it's not like that at all so of course I had to continue and guess what? I LOOOOVE this series! It's so addicting!
Sookie Stackhouse is a twenty five year old attractive woman who never has a date. Why, you say? Oh that's only because she can read people's minds and well, that tends to get in the way you know: "her butts too big", "is she gaining weight," etc, you get the point. People think waaaay more crazier stuff than that though. Sookie usually puts up her mental guard to block of people's thoughts, but sometimes it gets hard since it can get exhausting. Thank goodness that when this cute vampire dude comes along, she can't hear his thoughts! It's sooo relaxing and peaceful to hear..nothing.
Something's been going on around town. Girls that "associate" themselves with vampires are getting murdered. Because vampires, their existence known to the world, are not necessarily treated warmly by all, they are the number one suspects, especially the new vamp in town. Since Sookie's hanging out more and more with the new vampire (I won't tell you his name so you can laugh when you find out hehe it made me laugh so much) she may be one of the killer's targets. *suspenseful music* Because of that stupid darn murderer Sookie's life keeps getting messier and messier. She ends up having problems with her brother, the people around her, and her love life. She later ends up finding out that vampires are not the only supernatural beings around.
I gotta say one of my absolute favorite things about the series (I've read part of the second book already hehe) is when Sookie reads people's minds and the reader gets to know what the characters are thinking, it's sooo great and usually laugh out loud funny. Trust me there's a whole lot of laugh producing writing in this book, which of course makes it that much better. The story is really a page turner and you'll just love it a whole bunch and want to immediately read the next book and the next and so on, there's nine already!!! Can't wait to read all of those and patiently await the next ones. I'm so darn curious as to what could possibly happen next and in the rest of the books and also with Sam the adorable bar tender/boss ooh gosh I want to know soo bad!!!! :D Note: Something else I really liked was that B, the new vamp, is not the hottest guy around, I just think that's great, in fact he's not super hot or six foot whatever like ALL the male protagonists seem to be, I just love that this book is different in so many ways.
I also love that Charlaine Harris is so very creative about the vampire lore and such. It's so different from any of the other vampire books I've read and it just makes me yearn for more of her writing. Harris does not do that annoying thing others tend to do. What I mean is that some folks tend to say something like "oh that's just a common missbelief" you know what I mean? When a character or whomever is taking about vampire lore. Well I hope you understand what I'm saying because I can't really think of any other way to explain it.
The vampires in this series:
- don't like garlic because it smells so bad (okay I've read some other ones with this reason)
-some can fly, not all of them, and not in bat form haha
-some of their minds can be read
-are super strong
-have superspeed
-don't eat
-drink Japanese synthetic blood to stay alive
-actually sleep in coffins!! I like that she's sticking to the old stuff :D
-can't be around daylight because of the flaming hot sun that will burn them
There's a lot of other stuff but I can't remember everything. It's all good though, I promise. :)

NOW go read this!!!

The New York Times - Katie Roiphe

In the course of her dark and eventful tale, Cashore plays with the idea of awkwardness, how at a certain age gifts and talents are burdens, how they make it impossible to feel comfortable in the world. And in this she writes a fairly realistic portrait of teenage life into the baroque courts of her outlandish kingdoms…In many respects Graceling is a study of mysterious angers: it offers a perfect parable of adolescence, as its characters struggle with turbulent emotions they must learn to control. The consequences are more tangible than they usually are in more mundane settings—if Katsa loses control, she breaks someone's jaw by accident—but the principle is the same. The teenage characters in this novel, like some we may know in life, grow into their graces. They realize that their monstrous individuality is not so monstrous after all.

Sounds good huh? I've heard a lot about it so of course I had to get me a copy, I was going to wait until it came out on paperback when it's cheaper, like I usually do with books. You see, this is what broke people do :( hehehe ..or just someone who wants to save a couple o' bucks

Dream Thursday

This is the second Dream Thursday, had to skip the last one since I didn't have access to the all powerful internet. :D

Don't remember what day exactly I had this dream but here goes...

I dreamt that I was hopping from one floating object to another in this very large, deep, dirty lake. I didn't know how to swim so I was really scared of falling into the water and drowning. At some point I didn't land correctly and fell into the cold water. One of my cousins who's a year younger than me, came out of nowhere and saved me. He just continued to swim, just like a fish, not worrying about drowning of course.
Later on I ended up in dark building (no lights anywhere!) barely lit by the moonlight seeping in through the windows. This Asian teenage girl was out to get me. By get me I mean kill me. I have no idea what I must have done to piss her off but she was definitely out for my blood. For most of this part of my dream I was hiding from her and trying to find a way out of that stupid building. It was really high up, I was in maybe the third story of the weird building. Well from the outside it looked like the slums found in India, not just there but if you've seen Slumdog Millionaire or an environmental video, or the news, gah! you know what I mean hopefully. Basically, it looked like it was coming apart. Since it was surrounded with hundereds of similar looking buildings all packed next to each other...it would've been pretty darn hard for me to get out safely. Maybe I should've tried anyway, compared to facing the wrath of that crazy girl, I might have been better off, who knows. Anyway, right after turning around and having looked out another window, Crazy found me and stabbed me in the back, right through my chest, with a samurai sword she got from who knows where. For some reason, it didn't hurt.

Goes to show that I REALLY need to learn how to swim. :( Yeah I don't know how, lame I know and scary, well dream wise anyway since I've had tons of dreams about drowning, they all sucked. I also need to stop anticipating the movie Blood: the Last Vampire (!!!!) but that is NOT happening any time soon. :D If you have no idea what I'm talking about check out the trailer here. If you love the anime/manga Blood+ and the animated version of Blood: the Last Vampire, then you'll want to see it too.

So...what did YOU dream recently? :D

Happy dreams!

Evermore by Alyson Noel

Rating: 3.6/5
Age R: 15+
Thoughts:
Evermore surprised me so dang much!
After being in a car accident where Ever's (main character's name) mom, dad, and sister died, she can pretty much read people's thoughts and see their auras. She would have gone to wherever it is they went if she had not idled by to see some pretty flowers. By the time she looked back at her family, they were gone, crossed over. She woke up and now she has that ability. What makes her able to see people more clearly is by touching them. There are different aura colors, see the chart below, that tell what a person is feeling.
In order to help a bit in keeping her abilities at bay, she wears baggy pants and a hoodie. This keeps her pretty blue eyes and great blond hair from being visible, which makes her two best friends wonder about her a bit.
Ever can see everyone's aura, that is until she comes finally sees the new hot guy everyone seems to be thinking about. He has no aura, not one little bit of color around him at all. What could that mean? Is he dead. He seems to be showing an interest in her and keeps giving her read tulips which of course makes her happy but then he turns and gives some flowers to one of the most popular girls in school which happens to hate Ever. Then he comes back, then he disappers on her, then comes back again. But does he have a girlfriend? And what is that? She doesn't have an aura either.....
Curious about this book now? :D If you hadn't been curious before I'm betting you are now.
I liked this book, thought is was pretty neat but it's not amazing. I'm still REALLY looking forward to the sequel and hoping it'll be much, much better.

aura color chart:
red: energy, strength, anger, sexuality, passion, fear, ego
orange: self-control, ambition, courage, thoughtfulness, lack of will, pathetic
yellow: optimistic, happy, intellectual, friendly, indecisive, easily led
green: peaceful, healing, compassion, deceitful, jealous
blue: spiritual, loyal, creative, sensitive, kind, moody
violet: highly spiritual, wisdom, intuition
indigo: benevolence, highly intuitive, seeker
pink: love, sincerity, friendship
gray: depression, sadnesss, exhaustion, low energy, skepticism
brown: greed, self-involvement, opinionated
black: lacking energy, illness, imminent death
white: perfect balance
Cool:
The whole aura deal and the premise. I also really loved the tulips. :D

Not so cool:
The antagonist was beyond lame to me. I'm sorry but it seriously disappointing me that she wasn't really evil enough you know? She was just like "I'm evil I'm gonna kill you..except I'm gonna keep talking so you'll have time to get away and I might punch you a bit but it won't really do you any harm" Lame.

One Butt Cheek at a Time by Amber Kizer

Rating: 3.5/5
Age R: 14+
Thoughts:
Read this one a while back so my memory's a bit foggy.
One Butt Cheek at a Time
I thought this book was pretty okay. A quick, light, fun read but not oooh awesome. It did make me laugh out loud in many parts though gotta give Kizer that. ;D
Gert is a freshman in high school and she is just trying to get by and get it over with hopefully in one peace and one butt cheek at at time instead of one step at a time you know? She writes in this diary (cute cover!) about all the crud she has to deal with.
I thought this book was very funny and unique and just plain bold at times because a lot of the things Gert goes through everyone goes through so it's quite easy to relate to it. The reason why I gave it a 3.5 instead of anything higher is because the story was just not that interesting. It was just okay, a C, mediocre, ehh. But it was very fun to read about the goings on in her life mainly because it was soo funny though. :D This is one of those books you want to check out of the library not necessarily buy.
Apparently there will be a sequel! I am definitely looking forward to it, I might just check it out of the library though. It's just one of those books, enjoyable but not so much that I'd spend what little money I have on it.
Then again, I know some people would enjoy this much more than me but maybe if they're younger like 14-16. I know I'm letting my little 13 year old cousin borrow it in a year since she'd love it and find it hilarious too.

Two Lovers

Rating: 5/5
Age R: 17+ Rated-R
Thoughts:
This movie is sooo dang great! I hadn't really considered watching it until I ended up with free screening tickets to see it last month a while before it was released. I'm soo happy I did because wow! This movie is freakin' awesome. I had no idea what to expect, I mean I didn't think it was going to be that great, but I ended up loving it, I am definitely getting this when it comes out on DVD. It's hilarious, incredible, sooooo sad and just wow, amazing writing I just..wow I'm speechless. You just have to watch it.
This movie is about a guy (Joaquin Phoenix) who has some issues. He's a thirty something still living at home and has been hugely broken hearted by this girl quite a few years ago. He's basically a loser with no girl in his life, besides his mom. His parents worry about him, love him, and want him to be happy not just wasting away in his room. His parents and the parents of this brunette lady (as you can tell I'm HORRIBLE with names), are trying to get them together. The girl actually shows some interest in him, duh he's cute!, and he shows some interest in her BUT the girl next door (well not literally next door, in the same building anyway), a beautiful blond (Gwyneth Paltrow) basically has him infatuated and a bit obessed with her ever since he first lays his eyes on her. The huge problem is, blondie automatically sees dude man as a friend, a brother a confidant, not as what he'd like her to see him as. She especially doesn't like him that way because she's seeing another guy. Man!! It's such a huge and hilarious surprise who she's seeing. Trust me, it's unexpected and laugh out loud funny, so are many, many other moments. Mixed in are many sad moments too, and boy do they make you sad because they are just so heartbreaking especially since it makes you think because you know these kinds of things happen more often than we'd like and yet we never even know it.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Rating: 4.9/5
Age R: 14+ (I say this because of the violence)
Thoughts:
I heard sooo darn much about this book but until I read Debby's review I decided to just go for it especially since she said that it's similar to Battle Royale, indeed it was. I gotta say though, I took off a bit from the rating because it's not as bloody and gory as Battle Royale which just added to the details and realisticness from the "games".
Suzanne Collins sure knows how to write a book. I could NOT under any circumstances put down this book! I was reading it on my way to California on the airplane, in the lines while I waited, as the plane took off, until I finished it which was in about 5 hours or so. It's just that amazing! The story grabbed me from the first page onwards and I just could not part with this book and after finishing it...whoa! My mind was blown (not literally like some unfortunate characters). I love this book so dang much and am anxiously waiting for the sequel Catching Fire which is to be released THIS September 1st (!!!!!), I am beyond excited. :D
This book is about a sixteen year old girl, Katniss, who lives in a post apocalyptic world. She lives in the ruins of what was once North America (when I read this I though "hey I live there!!" hehe). She's part of the 12th disctict, basically the lowest of them all. In this crazy nation of hers exist The Hunger Games which are what the Capitol created in order to remind everyone that they are in charge. Those folks are freakin' crazy, they threaten the 12 districts in the nation with starvation and death, hence the Hunger Games (you'll see). In the Hunger Games 12-18 year olds are the only ones that can enter, and you don't have the choice to not go, of course unless you're picked and someone volunteers for you but who would volunteer for you when they'd most likely die?
Here's how it works:
-Once you turn 12 your name is entered once into a bowl of unluckyness for you, and everyone else who's entered of course. The year after that your name goes in twice then three and so on. Once thing you can do to make is less sucky for you is to put your name in their five times (I'm pretty sure it's five) in exchange for some food, quite a number of people do this since duh they're starving!
-I already explained about the volunteering
-Two people a boy and a girl are chosen each year from all of the 12 districts to participate in the Hunger Games.
-You cannot take any weapons in with you, some will be provided for you but who knows what it'll be it may just be a rock. Whatever it is the game makers want to do during the game, they'll do it, as long as they keep the audience interested. Oh did I not mention that it's mandatory for everyone else to watch the game live? As in watch all these kids kill each other. :( Horrible, horrible, but entertaining to read nonetheless. :D Hey if it was real life I'd be like "oh man, that sucks" okay not exactly it would be really bad and I'd be shocked, sad, furious, etc.
-If you are chosen you HAVE to partake in the Hunger Games...except for that one exeption, like I said. You are then taken into some random piece of land chosen by the game makers of course. It's completely unknown to the players and who knows where they might end up. Once there, they fight to the death. Last man/woman/kid standing wins, gets to live, and has their whole district fed for a very long time (there are more perks though).

What's sucks about the fact that Katniss has to be in the Hunger Games is that she does not have the same advantages as many of the other participants. The ones from District 1 for example are trained from a very young age just so they can be ready for the Hunger Games and do their very wealthy District proud. Oh and besides the whole she may die thing, she's also up against this really sweet guy, Peeta, who helped her from starving once. She may just have to end up killing him. It's not all bad though. She and her friend Gale have been hunting illgaly in the woods near her district ever since both of their dads died in the same mine explosion, so she has quite a bit of training too, but of course, nothing compared to the others, still, it's better than nothing, and she's great with a bow and arrow.
All the awesomeness does not stop there, besides the fact that while you're reading it your heart beats like 300 bpm because it seems like Katniss or anyone can die in the next sentence, there is also a bit of drama. And not just any drama, love drama hehe It's soo great and very unexpected, just like everything else. I CAN'T wait to find out what will happen next!
This book is just so darn great I HIGHLY recommend it. It's just so fast paced and the fact that the protagonist has such a great, strong, personality that you just can't help but cheer her on, makes this book beyond awesome.

No quotes for this one because YOU HAVE TO READ IT! ..besides I do not want to give anything away not even one sentence. :D

-books sprinkled with a bit of humor amid an insanely awesome story

The Mortal Instruments City of Bones and City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments)Rating: 3/5
Age R: 12+
Thoughts:
Okay I read this book two years ago so I forgot a few things. I'm not very good with the whole remembering thing, ask anyone. For example this one time I called my sister by MY name. Sheesh I am loosing it I tell you. Well here goes...
In City of Bones, it's a world of faeries, warlocks, vampires, demons and of course shadowhunters. Don't know what shadowhunters are? Then let me tell you. Shadowhunters are those chosen few who are like the police of the supernatural, in a way. They are the ones who kill demons and well all the bads. Clary, a fifteen year old, finds out she has the Sight. Basically, she can see what regular mundanes like you and me can't, unless you have it too hehe man that'd be really cool. All those bads in her world cannot be seen to those who are human and without the Sight. This little revelation causes the Shadowhunters she comes across to wonder why the heck she can see them. Curiouser and curiouser indeed. :D Soon after finding this out about herself her mother dissappears to who knows where since apperantly she's somehow connected to this new and strange world, well new to Clary. Clary, with the help of come new friends (hot guys included) help try and find her. As this goes on there's a demon trying to kill her. Neat huh?
City of Bones is a pretty darn good and entertaining read. The covers alone draw you in so of course you expect some awesomeness to come from the story, and Cassandra Clare really does deliver. I gave this a 3.7 instead of anything higher because there were some things about the book that I just did not like. The fact that most of the story consists of the history of its world gets kind of boring after a while and just plain slow. I was not a big fan of the fact that Cassandra Clare uses so many similes, it just kinda grrr-ed me. There's plenty of action, love stories, and unexpected twists to make up for most of that though. :D By unexpected twists, I especially mean the ending, whoa! that was some ending, it was so very, very unpredictable! I just did not see that coming. I won't say what it is because I wouldn't want to ruin it for those who have not read this book.

City of Ashes (Mortal Instruments)Rating: 3/5
Age R: 12+
Thoughts:
This one's fresh in my memory since I finished it last week hehe, I began it months, months ago though.
In this second book to the Mortal Instruments series, Clary is trying to deal with the issues of not being able to be with the very hot and freakin' amazing Jace all the while trying to figure out away to stop the VERY evil doings by you know who. Then there's the little problem with Simon. Actually later on it becomes problems.
I love the more surprises and twists that happen in this novel but again, this one was slow for me but for some reason it was even slower than the first book. I can't pin point exactly what it was that made me stop reading it for months and months before being able to pick it up again. Either way that was only the first half of the book, the second half really really picked up especially in the action and surprises departments. :D Loved that soo much! The whole this person can't be with that one deal made me sooo sad at times because there's these love triangles (squares? pentagons?) all over that place that are just awww ..poor fellas :(

Teen Book Drop

March 17, 2009 (Seattle, Wash.)Teen patients in pediatric hospitals across the United States will receive 8,000 young-adult novels, audiobooks, and graphic novels next week as readergirlz, Guys Lit Wire, and the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) celebrate the third annual Support Teen Lit Day on April 16.

In its second year, “Operation TBD” (short for Teen Book Drop), puts free books donated by 18 book publishers into the hands of many teens most in need of escape, inspiration and a sense of personal accomplishment. Books with exceptional characters and fabulous stories can provide just that for teens and their families dealing with difficult, long-term hospital stays.

At a time when philanthropic giving is down, readergirlz co-founders have been inspired by overwhelming industry support for Operation TBD. “readergirlz is always looking for innovative ways to connect teens with literature, “ said Dia Calhoun, co-founder of readergirlz and acclaimed young-adult author. “We’re honored that publishers have supported this goal by giving so liberally this year.”

Operation TBD also aims to encourage all teens to choose reading for pleasure as a leisure activity, over other entertainment options. Inciting the broader teen community to participate in Operation TBD in its drive to spur reading on a national scale, readergirlz has launched a trailer on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/readergirlz) inviting teens and YA authors to leave a book in a public place on April 16. When visiting www.readergirlz.com, participants can download bookplates to insert into the books they’ll leave behind, which explain the surprise to the recipient and tell them to read and enjoy.

This event is such a special one because it not only raises awareness about teen literature, but it also truly helps those teens most in need. Teens facing illnesses will be able to find an age- appropriate new book to read while in the hospital — teen books matter and not just any old book will do,” said Sarah Cornish Debraski, YALSA president. “Our thanks to the publishers, readergirlz, and Guys Lit Wire. It’s wonderful to unite with these organizations to forward this cause.”

Participating book publishers who have donated books or audiobooks include Abrams Books, Bloomsbury/Walker Books, Candlewick Press, Full Cast Audio, Hachette Book Group, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Hyperion, Milkweed, Mirrorstone Books, Orca Book Publishers, Peachtree Books, Perseus Book Group/Running Press, Random House, Scholastic, Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, Soft Skull Press & Red Rattle Books, TOKYOPOP and Tor/Forge/Starscape/Tor Teen.

“Putting the right book into the hands of a teen can turn that teen into a reader for life, “ said Suzanne Murphy, VP and Group Publisher, Scholastic Trade Book Publishing. “We are delighted to have the opportunity to help Operation TBD show teens firsthand just how much fun reading can be.”

Pediatric hospitals that have signed up to receive books include Phoenix Children's Hospital (Phoenix, Ariz.), Rady's Children's Hospital (San Diego, Calif.), Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Children's Hospital and Research Center (Oakland, Calif.), All Children's Hospital (St. Petersburg, FL), Children's Memorial Hospital (Chicago, Ill.), UM C.S. Mott Children's Hospital (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics (Kansas City, MO), The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Mary Bridge Children's Hospital & Health Center (Tacoma, Wash.) and Seattle Children's Hospital.

“Our teen patients here at Seattle Children’s loved the books donated through the Operation Teen Book Drop last year,” said Kim Korte, Child Life Manager, Seattle Children’s Hospital. “Books are a wonderful avenue for our patients to be distracted from the pain and stress of hospitalization. We are always in need of books and greatly appreciate the generosity of the publishers who donated.”

Everyone who participates in Operation TBD is invited to celebrate at the TBD Post-Op Party on April 16 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time on the readergirlz blog: http://readergirlz.blogspot.com.
