North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley
Age R: 13+ It's actually 12+ but I just don't think I'd want a 12 year old reading certain things in this book, it's not anything super traumatizing for 12 year olds I suppose, but if this were a movie, I'd rate it pg-13.
Release Date: February 1st, 2009 (next week!!!)
Thoughts:
This one is a really good read and original. I really like that it talks about beauty, art, geocaching, China, adoption, and a lot of other topics. :) I never even heard about geocaching before and now I'm definitely interested, it sounds really fun!
Terra is a sixteen year old girl who loves art, even if her father tells her that her collages are awful. She has a port wine stain which her father basically says is making her ugly. Her father is a horrible verbally abusive guy that treats her and her mother with so much cruelty at times that it just makes you so sad for Terra and all she has to deal with. Her father manages to lower Terra and her mother's self esteem by telling them not nice things often. He's such an a-hole! You will come to HATE him.
Terra and her mother accidentally crash with another vehicle. And that's when she meets Jacob. The adopted hot Asian guy who can relate to her port wine stain, but his scar does not bother him at all, he still holds his head high. Terra needs to learn to do that instead of trying her best to change her face.
Terra has other issues than her dad believe it or not. She has a boyfriend who's not that great and when she meets Jacob and is still with her boyfriend...well there's a bit of drama. :D hehe
This book is an awesome read I highly recommend it.
Publishers Weekly
Laced with metaphors about maps and treasure, Headley's (Girl Overboard) finely crafted novel traces a teen's uncharted quest to find beauty. Two things block Terra's happiness: a port-wine stain on her face and her verbally abusive father, a failed cartographer who views her as ugly and belittles the collages she creates. A car accident brings her together with Jacob, an Asian-born adoptee with unconventional ideas. Besides introducing her to new pursuits like geocaching, a treasure-hunting game using GPS, Jacob ends up traveling with her when they have an opportunity to visit China together with their mothers. The trip, far-reaching on many different levels, gives Terra a chance to rethink the past and re-map her goals. Taking readers to America's Northwest, then to China and back again, the author confidently addresses very large, slippery questions about the meaning of art, travel, love and of course beauty. All of her characters hold secrets; finding them out will be as rewarding as Terra's discoveries of caches. Ages 12-up. (Feb.)

Beautiful Americans by Lucy Silag
Age R: 16+
Thoughts:
Beautiful Americans was pretty good. I liked the story and the well-developed characters but I found myself having to take a break from this book every now and then. It is not really a page turner, more like a reality T.V show in writing, sometimes it can get slow.
Even though at times it bored me a bit, I still enjoyed it. I loved how Zack, Alex, Olivia, and P.J have their own secrets. It definitely made the book more interesting to read.
Zack-He's in Paris and he's there to make some friends and hopefully find a boyfriend. I found him to be a very likable character, you'd want him as your buddy. :) If you're a guy who's gay, you'd like him as your boyfriend. hehe
Alex-Oh Alex, this poor girl. She's in Paris to have fun! She's the kind of girl who always gets what she wants or is she? Overall she's a great person but...she has issues with guys I guess you could say. You'll like her character too.
PJ-Penelope is in Paris to get away from her troubled life. What is this girl hiding?
Olivia-Olivia is a sweet innocent girl who's also an amazing dancer. She is torn between staying in Paris or going back home with her parents and autistic brother.
I liked the way the book was narrated it was great and the reader comes to understand each character more. The chapters alternate between each of the four main characters' point of view. I love it! Though sometimes the author left a cliffhanger which made me go "ahh I want more" haha but it's a good kind of cliffhanger.
I can't wait for the sequel which comes out Fall 2009!! Hopefully it will be much, much better.
YOU WILL ENJOY READING THIS BOOK IF YOU LIKE:

Books in the Mail:
As an agent in a multinational media agency, Tess Drake deals with some of the world's biggest egos. And those are just the ones inside her firm. Bardwell International is an agency that operates in the ever-moving worlds of Rights, wrongs and revenge. Tess has been an agent there for longer than she cares to remember and now she's in trouble. Real trouble. After the mysterious death of the agency's senior partner, Lowell Bardwright, Tess's sworn enemy, Cosima Tate, has taken over running the asylum and would do anything to thwart Tess's career. Until now, Tess has believed herself to be bulletproof because her biggest client is Dorothy Starkwell, a popular children's writer for whom she she's just begun negotiating a new eight-figure deal. Tess sees Lowell's death as the opportunity to do what she has wanted to do for a long time: start her own agency--and take Dorothy and her new contract with her. But can Tess jump ship and risk losing her reputation, her clients, AND her next big deal--and still make it on her own? Are her balls made of steel or are they about to be crushed under Cosima's stilettoed heel?
There’s risk and there’s reward – or maybe not – in this wickedly sharp, page-turning novel that turns the world of agenting inside out and lays bare all the ambition, adrenalin and yes, luck, at the center of one young woman’s success.
As a little girl, Jane has no one. Her mother Vivienne Margaux, the powerful head of a major
When Jane is in her thirties, working for her mother's company, she is just as alone as she was as a child. Her boyfriend hardly knows she's there and is more interested in what Vivienne can do for his career. But not even Michael knows the reason behind why they've really been reunited.
Parker Stanhope has played soccer practically since she could walk. And now that she’s a high school junior, everything she’s worked for is finally coming together. She’s paid her dues on the field, and as an upperclassman, she’s a shoo-in for the varsity team. But that’s not what happens.

Now, she’s stuck with the freshmen, her friends are cutting her loose, and her love of the game is seriously beginning to fail. But Parker is determined to get her life back. She has to get on the varsity team, and she has the perfect plan. All she needs now is the right kind of coach.

This book sounds really good and I'm pretty sure I'll like it since it reminds me of Sundays at Tiffany's and Fair Godmother which I loved.
It's the summer after Mercy Heron graduates from high school, and she's living in the household of her domineering grandfather and a grandmother whose behavior has always been erratic--some folks even call it crazy. They've raised Mercy since her mother died giving birth to her under the June apple tree in the garden on a stormy night--the night Father Heron locked her out and ignored her pleas for help.
Mercy's days are spent working at the local diner, and hanging out with her wild best friend Della. Unlike Della, she's never seriously considered leaving the insulated community on Crooked Top mountain. Not until that summer when she meets Trout, a man who opens Mercy's eyes to a world beyond what she's known--both physically and emotionally. Their relationship must be kept secret, because Father Heron won't approve of his granddaughter being involved with a migrant worker. But when Mercy tries to escape, she'll learn just how powerful, and ruthless, her grandfather can be. And the truth of her past will threaten to forever bind her to the mountain.
As a child in 1920s West Texas, Annarose sees life and intelligence in everything, but after she is exiled to Los Angeles at 13, she loses her connection to spirit, and find herself searching for what she has lost through intellectual pursuits. As she matures, her philosophical studies and supportive friendship with a gifted musician lead to an awakening and she travels to Mexico to become a writer.
Her relationships with artist Frida Kahlo and Crisanto, the man who becomes her lover, connect her to all that is beautiful, wild, free, and happy. She embraces everything that they and their country represent and thus begins to transform her life-but before her transformation is complete, Annarose must return to the world she left as a child. Haunting and evocative, this sweeping literary fiction will stay with readers long after the last page.
I won this book at The Bluestocking Society, it sounds pretty darn good! :)
Dredging up the past can knock the present right off balance.
The world expects perfection from seventeen-year-old Shawna Gallagher, and for the most part, that’s what they get. She dates the right boys, gets good grades, and follows her father’s every rule. But when her estranged lesbian mother dies, it’s more than perfect Shawna can take. Suddenly, anger from being abandoned ten years ago is resurfacing along with Shawna’s embarrassment over her mother’s other family. As she confronts family secrets and questions from the past, Shawna realizes there’s a difference between doing the perfect thing and doing the right thing.
Shawna’s honest and relatable voice will draw readers in and hold them until the last page in this coming-of-age story. Jeannine Garsee has delivered a compulsively readable second novel, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Laurie Halse Anderson.
This one looks good too! The blonde model looks just like the one on the cover of North of Beautiful hehe it probably is her :) I love that book btw so get yourself a copy on February 1st when it comes out!! I have no idea why this is underlined.Books checked out of the library:
After years of frequent moves following her mother’s death, Chloe Saunders’s life is finally settling down. She is attending art school, pursuing her dreams of becoming a director, making friends, meeting boys. Her biggest concern is that she’s not developing as fast as her friends are. But when puberty does hit, it brings more than hormone surges. Chloe starts seeing ghosts–everywhere, demanding her attention. After she suffers a breakdown, her devoted aunt Lauren gets her into a highly recommended group home.
At first, Lyle House seems a pretty okay place, except for Chloe’s small problem of fearing she might be facing a lifetime of mental illness. But as she gradually gets to know the other kids at the home–charming Simon and his ominous, unsmiling brother Derek, obnoxious Tori, and Rae, who has a “thing” for fire–Chloe begins to realize that there is something that binds them all together, and it isn’t your usual “problem kid” behaviour. And together they discover that Lyle House is not your usual group home either…
When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton's type is girls named Katherine. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. Nineteen times, to be exact. On a road trip miles from home, this anagram-happy, washedup child prodigy has ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a bloodthirsty feral hog on his trail, and an overweight, Judge Judy-loving best friend riding shotgun-but no Katherines. Colin is on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which he hopes will predict the future of any relationship, avenge Dumpees everywhere, and finally win him the girl. Love, friendship, and a dead Austro-Hungarian archduke add up to surprising and heart-changing conclusions in this ingeniously layered comic novel about reinventing oneself.
Same for this one, it's been on my tbr list since I don't know when (!!!).
BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU. WHO’S WATCHING BACK?
The Washington Post - Mary Quattlebaum
This novel brims with new and evolving technology, which may fascinate some readers and bog down others. But the well-integrated explanations, plot twists, humor and romance between Marcus and a "h4wt" (translation: "hot") geeky babe will keep this thriller humming along even for techno-duhs. Cory Doctorow tackles timely issues, including the erosion of civil liberties in the name of national security. Hopefully, teens will pass this cautionary tale on to parents, teachers and government officials.
This one sounds awesome! I wanted to buy a lot of these books but I'm broke :( it's okay, the library is the next best thing.Sophomore year, Nicolette Antonovich was dumped two days before prom by the hottest guy at school. As a result, she became the proud owner of one unworn, perfectly magical pink vintage dress. But Nic is determined to put that night behind her for good. She's a junior now— older, wiser, and completely overwhelmed by a new set of problems: (1) The bank's ready to foreclose on her childhood home. (2) Her father's too busy with his "replacement" daughter to care. (3) Her best friend's brother is an eternal thorn in her side. (4) Her best friend isn't exactly the rose attached to that thorn. (5) Rumors are flying around school that could get her kicked off the volleyball team, which would (6) ruin all chances of a college scholarship. (7) She still likes the boy who dumped her in the first place. (8) And what in the world do you do with an unworn prom dress, anyway? Strangely, it's getting to the bottom of this last dilemma that just might hold the answer to all Nic's problems.
I read The abc's of kissing boys so of course I had to go and check these out. :D
At 17, Kate Delvecchio has one goal in life: to become a millionaire before the age of 20. And as far as she’s concerned, college will only slow her down. Unfortunately for Kate, the one thing her parents do agree on is that they totally disagree with her strategy. And so the deal is born. If Kate can raise five thousand big ones by graduation day, her parents will hand over the balance of her college account to invest as she pleases. No college, no degree, and no way she’ll ever be able to pull it off. But when Kate accidentally agrees to go to the sports banquet with the hottest guy at school, she stumbles upon a possible cash cow. The rest of the junior class is amazed that no-nonsense Kate could hook such a hottie, and one by one they approach her for help hooking their own. She doesn’t know anything about getting guys, but for $100 a pop, she’s more than willing to invent a six-step plan for How to Hook a Hottie. And how could that possibly backfire?
I better finish this one before February 15 that way I'll still be 17 and be able to relate to it more hahaKara Martinez has been trying to be "normal" ever since the accident that took her father's life when she was eleven years old. She's buried the caliente side of her Mexican heritage with her father and tried to be the girl her rigid mother wants her to be—compliant and dressed in pink, and certainly not acting out like her older brother Jason. Not even Danielle, her best friend at Valdez High, has seen the real Kara; only those who read her anonymous blog know the deepest secrets of the Sign Seer.
Because Kara has a gift—one that often feels like a curse. She sees signs, visions that are clues to a person's fate, if she can put together the pieces of the puzzle in time. So far, she's been able to solve the clues and avert disaster for those she's been warned about—until she sees the flash of a gun on a fellow classmate, and the stakes are raised higher than ever before. Kara does her best to follow the signs, but it's her heart that wanders into new territory when she falls for a mysterious guy from the wrong side of town, taking her closer to answers she may not be able to handle. Will her forbidden romance help her solve the deadly puzzle before it's too late...or lead her even further into danger?Man this one has been on my tbr list for a while too :D

Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet
Age Range: If this were a movie, I'd say Rated-R
Thoughts:
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! This book is amazing!!! I highly, highly recommend it. It's so darn awesome. It's one of THE best love stories I have ever read, and that's saying something, because I have read a lot of those. Awww <---I'm going to be thinking this every time I think about this book. I already miss Jane and Michael awwwww!!!! ehem..Anywho..this book is like none I have ever read before (yeah, yeah I saw that often, but it's soo true!) It's so darn original you have no idea, unless you've read it of course haha I absolutely love the idea of imaginary friends, which is one of the reasons I love Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends hehe. This book is about Jane and her imaginary friend Michael(!!!) who of course no one but her can see. When Jane's ninth(I know for sure it's her ninth birthday, on bn it says eight..hmm weird) birthday comes around, it's time for Michael to go. What always happens is that imaginary friends (yes there are more!) leave their kids then those kids forget about them, forever. But this time, for some crazy reason, it's different. Michael leaves, but Jane never forgot Michael like she was supposed to. :( The universe or The Man, has something in store for these two because..something very interesting is about to happen in the crazy world of Jane. :)
The writing is AMAZING! I loved the story and how it was put together. The chapters alternate from Jane's point of view to Michael's, so the reader finds out what each is thinking, it's nice. :) At times it could be so very funny and at others so very sad :( , at some point I wanted to cry because I thought something horrible was about to happen, this book is just so gripping! It is a completly lovely page turner that I had to finish once I got started. Like I said before, I highly recommend it. And hey, it's perfect for valentine's day coming up. :)

the abc's of kissing boys by Tina Ferraro
Age R: 12+
Release Date: OUT NOW!!
Thoughts:
This book was sooo cute! I'll admit, at first I thought, "hmm is it gonna be one of those books that's super predictable?" but thank goodness I was wrong. It was nothing like I thought it would be and I really enjoyed it. :)
Parker is a junior who loves soccer and this year she unfortunately did not make it into varsity with the rest of her junior "friends". She and her brother CLAYTON (ooh Mia Mar I hope you get a kick outta that) have come up with the Plan that will hopefully get her back on varsity. This plan includes a hot guy called Luke and a kissing booth, wonder what's gonna happen..... :D
I thought Parker and Tristan's relationship was so freaking adowable! I'll miss them :( I really liked how Tina Ferraro did this creative thing with her chapter titles, some of them made me giggle quite a bit. :D This book is a nice, cute, funny (man there's some jokes in there that will make you laugh out loud), short read that many will find enjoyable.
I will have to read Tina Ferraro's other YA books which are:
I participated in YA Enchanting Review's (check out the site it's awesome) recent chat with Tina Ferraro, she's really cool! She's sooo darn nice and funny and this comes across in her book so I really recommend reading them. :D Kelly Parra, author of Invisible Touch and Graffiti Girl, joined in too, I have not read her books but she seems super nice too so I'm reading those sooner than later...I guess if these authors weren't nice I'd still read their books haha

My Fair Godmother by Janette Rallison
Age R: 12+
Thoughts:
Ahh this book's so neat!! I did not think I was going to like it as much as I did, I'm so glad I was wrong. I loved this story Janette Rallison created. Great book about fairy tales, completely different from any other fairy tales out there.
I really felt for the protagonist, Savannah. Poor poor kid (16 yrs old but I like saying kid okay?). Her older sister betrayed her tsk tsk tsk by stealing her boyfriend, then afterwards both bastards pretty much acted like Savannah was the weird one for not forgiving them. Those turds!! Anywho....Savannah's dork of a Fairy, I mean Fair Godmother Chrysanthemum Everstar (neato name huh?), a cool sometimes pink haired funny teenager, messed up Savannah's wishes and because of her silly self Tristan, this guy from her school, ended up in the middle ages until he can become a prince. Savannah has to go back to help him get out, until then they're both pretty much stuck there, with no electricity, indoor plumming, clean water, etc. :(
This book made me laugh out loud at times and I just had to finish the book after first starting it, I finished it in one sitting thankyouverymuch :D It's just that entertaining. :) So, I would recommend this one if you're looking for a nice fun read. Ooooh and guess what?!! There's gonna be a sequel and I CAN'T wait to find out what Chrissy's next assigment is (!!!!!).
The cover-I didn't like that the cover doesn't show Chrissy's wings, that makes me sad :( but it makes me happy to make myself believe that the wings were fluttering so fast it couldn't be captured on film :) hehe other than that it's really pretty I especially love the background.
Synopsis
Finding your one true love can be a Grimm experience!
After her boyfriend dumps her for her older sister, sophomore Savannah Delano wishes she could find a true prince to take her to the prom. Enter Chrissy (Chrysanthemum) Everstar: Savannah’s gum-chewing, cell phone–carrying, high heel-wearing Fair Godmother. Showing why she’s only Fair—because she’s not a very good fairy student—Chrissy mistakenly sends Savannah back in time to the Middle Ages, first as Cinderella, then as Snow White. Finally she sends Tristan, a boy in Savannah’s class, back instead to turn him into her prom-worthy prince. When Savannah returns to the Middle Ages to save Tristan, they must team up to defeat a troll, a dragon, and the mysterious and undeniably sexy Black Knight. Laughs abound in this clever fairy tale twist from a master of romantic comedy.
