Rating: 4.5/5 Age R: suicide is a HUGE topic so you decide... It's officially Rated-R though.
Release Date: 2006
Synopsis:
Zia, distraught over breaking up with his girlfriend, decides to end it all. Unfortunately, he discovers there is no real ending, only a run-down afterlife that is strikingly similar to his old one, just a bit worse. Discovering that his ex-girlfriend has also "offed" herself, he sets out on a road trip, with his Russian rocker friend, to find her. Their journey takes them through an absurd purgatory where they discover that being dead doesn't mean you have to stop livin'.
Based on the short story, Kneller's Happy Campers," by Etgar Keret then later turned into a graphic novel called Pizzeria Kamikaze.
Thoughts:
It's been a while since I saw this (I saw it about a year after it came out) so I don't remember too much. Sorry :(
I really liked this movie! The title is what first brought my attention to the movie. I of course had to watch it. I mean wristcutters? Followed by the words "a love story"? That sounds interesting doesn't it? I mean interesting in a sad and creative way. It is.
The story starts off with the suicide of the main guy, Zia. He ends up in a place where all of those who've committed suicide go. It's all looks just like the real world except...sadder. To him life was awful and death is not any better. Zia winds up taking a road trip through Limbo (that's pretty much what that world is) with two other folks, Eugiene (quite a funny Russian guy) and Mikal. Together they go on a journey to find a certain person and figure some things out (I really don't want to say what for fear of spoiling it). They go through some fascinating adventures on the way. My favorite is the one where they stop by and get gas. This man has them write down what they were thinking when they did a certain something hehehe Kinda depressing though :(
The movie is pretty sad and of course has it's moments that make your heart hurt but then there are a few magical moments. Very, very creative ones. The whole movie's creative! It's also really hilarious at times. Oh, so funny. :)
The only thing I didn't like was that sometimes it got a bit dull. There were some scenes that could have been edited out to make it less boring to watch but oh well. Then again, you get to feeling just like they are feeling. They pretty much feel like having killed themselves only to end up in that place was ridiculous because now they feel like possibly killing themselves all over again.
I recommend this heartfelt movie with an interesting twist on what happens to those who commit suicide. At least rent it. PLEASE!
1-800-SUICIDE <---you can talk to someone if you are thinking about suicide. Don't think you can't. Don't ever think that. And especially don't kill yourself or harm yourself or others. Chin up! :D Quote/s:
Kneller-
"Once upon a time there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. And they grew next to each other. And every day the straight tree would look at the crooked tree and he would say, "You're crooked. You've always been crooked and you'll continue to be crooked. But look at me! Look at me!" said the straight tree. He said, "I'm tall and I'm straight." And then one day the lumberjacks came into the forest and looked around, and the manager in charge said, "Cut all the straight trees." And that crooked tree is still there to this day, growing strong and growing strange."
Eugene-
"Cute? That's what they say about the puppy. The only thing worse is good friend, or nice person. In plain English it means I'll leech off you as long as I can, but don't even think about getting into my pants."
