Where the Wild Things Are-Movie Review (TBR on October 16)

Rating: 4.7/5

Age R: PG

Release Date: October 16, 2009 (this Friday!)

Interest:
I became interested in this movie because I LOVED the book as a kid and the pics and trailer of the movie seemed incredible. I got the chance to watch it Monday at an advance screening! I also got a free poster woot! hehe I was too busy with work, school, etc to post an earlier review so sorry about that. :)

Synopsis:
Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are. He lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought.

As you all might already know, this movie is based on the book Where the Wild Things Are written by Maurice Sendak. Recently another book insipired by that one called Wild Things and written by Dave Eggers, was released. I put it on one of my Waiting on Wednesday posts here as you might remember. Gosh I really want to read it!

Thoughts:
It was incredible! The cinematography (yes the director, Spike Jonze is the creator/director of Jackass) was just lovely awww hehe so was the main character Max, played by Max Records. Isn't that cool? Same name! Max just wants some friends to play with and after being scolded by his mom (man, she says some awful things) he runs away and eventually finds his way to the land of the WILD THINGS. :) He first encounters Carol (voiced by Tony Soprano a.k.a James Gandolfini hehe I love the SOPRANOS!) who turns out to be a lot like Max. It's cute hehe He then meets the rest of the wild things. One of them is voiced by Paul Dano who I'm a huge fan of by the way. Max goes through so many adventures it's really amazing to watch. At times I must admit I was freakin' SCARED! You see this small, vulnerable, breakable boy on a huge screen, surrounded by tons of huge, strong, playful creatures. Most of the time when they were all running around and being wild, I got freaked out because it felt as if that boy would get crushed any second. Maybe I'm just a wuss though but be warned anyway.
You're going to get angry at Max's big sister, her friends, and her mom because man they could be harsh! Poor Max! I just wanted to pick him up, hug him, and play with him and his igloo. :'(
The movie overall was very fun to watch, albeit a bit scary like I said, it was also very serious at times especially the beginning and end. Some parts of the movie I could have done without because they were a bit boring but it didn't bother me a lot. I liked this movie so much I know I'm buying it in the future then watching over and over again. :) I just loved all the scenery so much I can't wait to watch it again. The atmosphere of it all is just great and gets your heart all warmed up. :D

I see Where the Wild Things Are as more of an art film than a children's film.

I had to walk out of this movie about half way through... it flat-lined after about 10 minutes and didn't recover after that
