Fire by Kristin Cashore

Rating: 5/5

Age R: 14+
(the sex in this novel is not as subtle as in Graceling, it's not graphic though)/PG-13

Release Date: October 5th, 2009

Synopsis:
She is the last of her kind...
It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. In King City, the young King Nash is clinging to the throne, while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. War is coming. And the mountains and forest are filled with spies and thieves. This is where Fire lives, a girl whose beauty is impossibly irresistible and who can control the minds of everyone around her.
Exquisitely romantic, this companion to the highly praised Graceling has an entirely new cast of characters, save for one person who plays a pivotal role in both books. You don't need to have read Graceling to love Fire. But if you haven't, you'll be dying to read it next.
***No spoilers just my opinion/review***
Thoughts:
I loved this book more than Graceling because Fire's story interested me more. They are completely different stories so I'll treat it as such. Or at least try. They are connected a bit though and in an interesting way.
Fire takes place near the world that Graceling took place in. I love how Cashore connects them and separates them. The people in Fire's world are not aware of the existence of those from the Graceling world and vise versa.
In Fire's world there are beautiful and extremely dangerous monsters. Fire is one of them.
Technically she is half monster and half human. It doesn't really matter because to everyone around her she's just a monster. In this book monster does not necessarily refer to a being that is evil, instead if refers to a being that is a creature that is not human, like a dog for example. Full monsters are for the most part just animals that will remind you a bit of dinosaurs, which I think is pretty cool. Or maybe they only reminded me of dinosaurs haha Not everyone treats her as if she might be dangerous. There are some who are extremely attracted to her and/or infatuated with her because like other monsters, she is beyond beautiful. This of course can lead to many problems to her which is why she must always be guarded. The fact that her father, Cansrel, who is like a mob boss, is well, her father, does not help. He is crazy and very violent. You do not want to mess with him or Fire for fear of what he will do to you. As you can tell, she has tons of krud to deal with.
Throughout the book Fire (17, later turns 18) goes through so much. She at times has flashbacks that help the reader learn more about her which I lvoed, but not nearly as much as I friggin' loved the love stories (yes, plural) in the book. You will laugh, you will cry, you will stomp your feet in frustration, but in the end you'll be extremely happy for going through such a wonderful journey. You will want to take it again. And again. And again...
Kristin Cashore is like J.K Rowling in a way, she also creates a magical world you won't ever want to leave. Normally I don't compare authors but I cannot think of a nother way to express how I felel about the incredible world Cashore has created. I most definitely can't wait for more Cashore! :) If you like books that make you forget about the world for quite some time, this is your book. So is Graceling of course. You can read them in whatever order you'd like since they're not really before or after each other. :D

Note:
There are two main guys of interest in this book. One of them is Archer and the other you can guess from reading the back of the book. I won't tell you in case you can't. You may feel really bad for one of them like I did and think "awww poor guy" but then you feel less bad when you find out about his hobbies. hahaha

Quote/s:
"He was still glowering into the distance, as if he expected the murderer to pop up from behind a boulder and wave."

IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY READ GRACELING and you're wondering which book to read first:
671879 You can read it in whatever order you want. No, part of the story is not obvious in Fire because of having read Graceling. There is a character that plays a huge part in Graceling that comes out on Fire, but the only thing that is obvious about him in Fire is what becomes of him. In Graceling, you'll know more about it. Really I recommend reading Fire first that way you wonder what will happen to him. Then when you read Graceling you're like oh man! hahaha
I hope that helped and that you love them :D

Yes I just copied and pasted that from an answer I gave to someone on goodreads who asked which book to read first.

This looks really good. I'd like to read these with my 11-year-old son, though he would definitely be squeamish about any sex. :)
